Obituary

Raymond R. Goossen

October 29, 1924 - April 21, 2026

Raymond R. Goossen, 101, of Adams (formerly Bayard, NE), passed away on April 21, 2026. Born to Frank and Agnus Goossen, in Goessel, KS, on October 29, 1924.

Raymond is survived by his wife Janice (Prochaska) of 27 years, daughters, Gwen Hannah and Cindy Peters of Fl, son, Jason Goossen, daughter, Jill Goossen of Omaha, NE, step-children, Perry (Kelly) Shuman of Lincoln, NE, Nancie Shuman of Los Angeles, CA, John (Mayra) Shuman of McKinney, TX, James Shuman of Omaha, NE, Allison Stavaridis of Los Angeles, CA, and David (Jamie) Shuman of Hickman, NE. He also had 21 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Raymond grew up in Newton, KS, until he enlisted in the Navy. He served in WWII in the Pacific. After four years in the Navy, he was honorably discharged and returned to Newton, KS. He gained his bachelor’s degree from Bethel College and went to teaching at a high school in Wilson, KS, from 1951-1954. He then took a job teaching at Beloit high school in Beloit, KS, from 1954-1962. During his time teaching he taught industrial arts and drivers ed. Many of his students took his class all four years of high school so they could create beautiful wood furniture. He also coached the high school basketball team while he was at Beloit. His love for building things wasn’t just for his high school students. In both Wilson and Beloit, he built his families homes from the ground up. He took great pride in building these homes and talked about it many years later with fond memories. Both of the family homes still stand today.

After he left teaching, he went on to work in insurance for many years. He started out in Topeka, KS, and worked at several different insurance agencies. A few years later he moved to Omaha, NE, and spent many years at Mutual of Omaha. He retired from Mutual of Omaha in 1988 as a Vice President.

As a young father, husband and even a retired grandfather, he enjoyed traveling. Many times, when his children were young, he would come home late in the week and want to leave and head to the mountains. He spent many days adventuring with his children and wives in Colorado. He also enjoyed taking his grandkids on adventures to places like Carhenge in western NE.

After retirement Raymond and Janice moved to Bayard, NE, and purchased a restaurant. They later sold the restaurant and purchased a vending trailer. They spent many summer evenings selling ice cream from that trailer. Further into retirement they sold the vending trailer and purchased a bridal store together.

The time Raymond and Janice spent together was the best part of their adventures. He enjoyed traveling, selling ice cream, and the quiet days at home with a good book. He also loved his family. The grandchildren’s visits were the best part of his retirement. He would get down on the floor Christmas morning with his small grandchildren and help them play with their new toys. His grandchildren loved him and will forever miss Grandpa Ray!

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Myrle Buller, brother-in-law, Marvin Buller, son-in-law, Glenn Peters, granddaughter, Ileana Shuman, and grandson, Rafe Shuman.
