Obituary

Marilyn K. Carroll

November 18, 1938 - April 10, 2026

Marilyn K. Carroll passed away on April 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. She was born on November 18, 1938, on a farm near McCool Junction, Nebraska, and lived to be 87  years old.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Nina (Fern) Hall; sisters Treva Perkins and Phyllis Bickert; brothers Vernon Hall, Roland Hall, and Norman Hall; grandchildren Raelynn Belt, Joseph Belt, Tommy Shaw, and Doug Shaw; and nephews Marvin Hall, Lonnie Bickert, and Danny Hall.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 49 years, Jim Carroll; her brother Gary Hall (Nancy); her children Dennis Belt (Cindy), Janice Patterson, Keith Belt, and Kari Shaw; her stepchildren Chris Humanik, Bob Carroll, Greg Carroll (Karen), Mark Carroll, and Jeff Carroll (Patty); 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Marilyn was raised on a farm and graduated from high school before attending the Lincoln School of Commerce. She worked at the LT&T; phone company in Lincoln prior to moving to a farm near Emerson, Nebraska, where she farmed until 1969. She later returned to Lincoln, where she spent time as a stay-at-home mom before working at Bethany IGA and B & R Grocery. After marrying Jim, they moved to Columbus, where they owned two car washes and a gas station. Marilyn was a tireless worker throughout her life.

She was well known for her legendary farm-fresh fried chicken and homemade ice cream, and she was an excellent cook. Marilyn and Jim also enjoyed spending winters at their home in Arizona.

In retirement, Marilyn enjoyed an active social life. She and Jim belonged to a camping club and a square-dancing club, and they spent many happy hours playing cards and dominoes with friends. Marilyn loved gardening and being outdoors—at heart, she was always a farmer.

One of her greatest joys was hosting large family gatherings. She welcomed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren into her home for holidays such as Easter, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas for as many years as she was able.

Marilyn was always there to support her children and grandchildren in any way she could. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 15th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Roper and Sons Funeral Home South.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 16th at 10:00 a.m. at Roper and Sons Funeral Home South, 3950 Hohensee Drive, Lincoln, NE. Reception to follow service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marilyn’s memory to the Dementia Society of America at www.dementiasociety.org/donate.

There are many things to remember about Aunt Maren. One for sure is her laugh. All the times her, Jim, Uncle Norn, Uncle Rollie, Aunt Annie, Uncle Gary, Aunt Nance, and Mom and Dad playing cards at our house. They would all get to laughing but I could always tell Aunt Maren’s. Along with that was her great smile. She reminded me of Grandma Hall. I will miss you Aunt Maren. Rest in Peace. Play cards in Heaven!
