Squirrel proudly served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam era and later continued his commitment to service in the Army National Guard. He was a devoted member of the VFW and DAV organizations. Throughout his life, he worked in many professions, spending a number of those years as a dedicated truck driver.
Squirrel shared a devoted 41‑year marriage with his wife, Fayetta Splain, a partnership marked by love, loyalty, and unwavering support. Their life together was filled with laughter, hard work, and the quiet strength that comes from truly knowing and standing by one another.
Family members who survive him include his wife, Fayetta; his daughter, Monica Babcock (Doug) of Lincoln; his son, Andy Showen (Karen) of Vancouver, WA; his brothers, Paul Splain of Thayer and Doug Splain (June) of Argyle, TX; his daughter‑in‑law, Staci Wagner of Lincoln; and his granddaughters, Trinity and Saylor Babcock, and Haley Wagner (fiancé Nick Berte). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Justin Splain (Laura), as well as his brother‑in‑law, Greg Strubbe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Yvonne Schreurs and SuAnn Strubbe; his brother, Dean; and his son, Jerry Wagner.
Graveside service: 10:00 am Thursday, June 25, 2026, Wyuka Cemetery. 3600 O Street, Please meet at the “O” Street entrance.
A Celebration of Life will follow the service at 1st Avenue Lounge and Social Hall at 2310 N. 1st Street in Lincoln, NE.
