Obituary

Jack Nebelsick

April 4, 1924 - January 24, 2024

Jack Nebelsick, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lincoln, NE, on April 4, 1924, and was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1942.

Jack served his country in the Navy, joining after high school graduation. He became a gunner’s mate on the USS Wesson (DE 184, a Destroyer Escort), serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His life changed when a Japanese Kamikaze pilot struck his ship, claiming the lives of several sailors. Grateful for his own survival and that of his shipmates, Jack made a decision to dedicate his life to serving God.

In 1947, Jack married Ann Randolph, and together they built a loving family with four children. Sadly, Ann succumbed to cancer on August 24, 1989. Soon thereafter, Jack found companionship and love again with Bonnie Nelson. They were united in marriage on August 10, 1990, and enjoyed more than 33 wonderful years together. They enjoyed traveling, attending Navy reunions, and spending time with family and their many close  friends.

Jack’s commitment to service extended beyond his military duties. After an honorable discharge, he pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska, earning a degree in agriculture. Jack and Ann farmed briefly in Pawnee County, in southeast NE, before settling in Schuyler, NE, where Jack served as the County Agent for Colfax County from 1957 to 1962.

A unique and challenging chapter of Jack’s life took place during six years of missionary service with his family in Puerto Rico from 1962 to 1968. His unwavering dedication to God and his fellow sailors on the USS Wesson continued to guide him throughout this time.

Following their return to Nebraska, Jack owned and operated Acme Tree Care for 27 years until his retirement. Jack and Ann were active members of Holmes Park Bible Church. Jack and Bonnie continued attending the same church after they married, later renamed Heartland Bible Church.

Jack Nebelsick is preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Randolph; his parents, Albert “Lefty” and Rhoda (Kilhefner); his sister, Marilee and brother-in-law Bob Frans, and his nephew Douglas Frans.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; his children, Thomas (Nadine) Nebelsick, Susan Nebelsick St. Croix (Virgin Islands), Daniel Nebelsick (Jacksonville, OR), and Rebecca Nebelsick (Boise, ID); as well as Bonnie’s children, Thomas (Ogie) Nelson and Rebecca (Nick) Whitney, both of Lincoln. Jack also leaves behind 14 cherished grandchildren.

Jack Nebelsick will be remembered for his selfless dedication to family, faith, and service. May he rest in eternal peace.

Jack Nebelsick’s life was the best example that I’ve known of “The Greatest Generation.”. His 100 years represented much more than longevity. He was truly a “servant leader”, to his family, his church, his country, his work, and to those who were fortunate to know him. Jack was a man of incredible grace. In every situation, he listened to those who needed someone to hear them. He validated others by caring who they were. Jack was a powerful example of how to live and how to treat others.

We met Jack and Bonnie on a cruise and formed a lasting friendship. Jack was a Dear, Gentle man. He loved Our God and he loved us. Lincoln has lost the best booster they could ever have. The times we visited he showed us around and gave us a history lesson. Dear Bonnie and family, our hearts break and he will be missed by us too!

I was a friend of Jack’s children and first met him more than 50 years ago. Later, starting in the 1990’s, I would run into him while I was an administrator for the Lancaster County Department of Corrections. Jack was a religious volunteer for the department, ministering to the needs of the incarcerated in the downtown jail. Working with inmates as he did can be extremely difficult and frustrating work, but he volunteered to do so for years. I always found he maintained a positive and cheerful attitude and he had a great sense of humor. His dedication and strong Christian belief was always evident. He was a wonderful person to know, and will be missed by many.
