Throughout his lifetime, Hayes directed a mission school in Ethiopia, East Africa, served as a bi-vocational pastor of churches in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, and most extensively served as a public educator as well as being the Principal for Juniata Valley Elementary school for 21 years before retiring. Each role was an opportunity for him to be a witness and watchman for the cause of Christ having believed that if Jesus died, was buried and then raised by God, it also meant that those who believe in Jesus and have died will be raised by God to eternal life. (I Corinthians 15 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18). He preached this good news throughout his life in both spoken words and actions. His legacy of service, humility, and generosity left a lasting impression on unreached people in Africa, church communities striving to grow in faith, and countless school aged children. Hayes wrote a book about his life and faith, titled Disclosure, the sharing of a heart, mind, and life of 85 years.
Hayes was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his nine children: Rachel (Steve) Vogel of New Braunfels, TX; Paul (Monica) Silvey of Methuen, MA; Dave (Beth) Silvey of Monrovia, CA; Philip Silvey of Rochester, NY; Steve (Lori) Silvey of Kentwood, MI; Lois (Steve) Snyder of Lincoln, NE; Martha (Steve) Van Zee of Warrenville, IL; Joe (Naisha) Silvey of State College, PA; and John (Candace) Silvey of Vine Grove, KY; 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
