Obituary

Dr. Ernest W. Sigler (Ernie)

November 2, 1945 - October 31, 2025

Dr. Ernest W. Sigler (Ernie) passed from this life on Friday, October 31st at the age of 79 years. He was born in Dallas, TX to Ernest W. and Juanita Sigler.

He was a man of great integrity and humbleness with compassion for others and had a wonderful sense of humor which will be greatly missed. He graduated from Adamson High School, Dallas TX in 1964. He accepted a football scholarship that year to the University of Nebraska and persevered until he was named starting QB in 1968. He won both the Guy Chamberlin and Tom Novak Awards his senior year. He was a Graduate Assistant for the football team from 1969 – 1970. He served in the National Guard and was named Soldier of the Year.   He graduated from the UNMC College of Dentistry in 1975. Planning to serve only two years in the military he went on to serve thirty years reaching the rank of Colonel. He retired from the US Army in 2005. He was asked to teach at his alma mater that same year. He planned to teach only five years and continued to teach for seventeen years. He received numerous honors both while serving in the military and while teaching at the college of dentistry.  He was selected as teacher of the year for 17 years and impacted many lives for the future. His most cherished accomplishment each year was being selected to “hood” the graduating students.

He was the guest speaker at a church banquet in 1972 and a chance meeting with Nancy Kolb led to their marriage in 1975 and 50 wonderful years together. They were blessed with 2 sons. His family was his greatest joy and in his final days were his greatest comfort. He is survived by his wife and sons, Scott and grandchildren, Amaris and Zachary of Olathe, KS and Jason (Stephanie) and grandchildren, Hannah and JP of Atlanta GA. He is also survived by his brothers, Tom (Judy) of Detroit, TX and Ron (Sherry) of Corvallis Oregon, nieces, nephews and cousins.

His sons and brothers made numerous flights and trips to help care for him in his final months. Their devotion and love will never be forgotten. He received extraordinary medical care during his initial diagnosis of melanoma in 2016 which enabled him to enjoy nine years cancer free. We wish to thank the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center, CCA, Visiting Angels and HoriSun Hospice for their care when Melanoma returned this past May.

Dr. Sigler made a tremendous influence on me during my years as a student at the College of Dentistry. His ability to connect with students and remember details about them and their families was unmatched. His kindness, compassion, humor and upbeat personality are only a few of the reasons he was truly beloved by his students. We need more people in the world like Dr. Sigler. Sending the Sigler family love and prayers during this difficult time.

I had the privilege to have Dr. Sigler as a clinical instructor during my dental school years. He is truly one of those people you meet in life that are nothing short of extraordinary. His level of compassion, kindness, soft-spokenness, and his ability to be in the moment with his students; were unmatched. He was a remarkable human, and someone who fulfilled his purpose in this world while elevated all those surrounding him.

We all meet a lot of people as we go through life, and if we’re lucky, we’ll meet a VERY small handful of those people who are just good to their core. Ernie was one of those, and he’ll be missed by every person who knew him.

I worked with Dr. Sigler when I was a dental assistant at the College of Dentistry. He was a pleasure to work with. He valued the role of a dental assistant in the dental field and loved guiding the students through the beginning of their careers. He will be greatly missed!

Ernie was my teammate and lead us as the QB of our 1968 team. Below is my message to Mike Beran, who manages communications among former players: Red: As always, thank you for sharing these sad but necessary messages. If there was anyone who didn’t like Ernie, then they must not have had any friends themselves. I always had the highest respect for Ernie. He was as kind and caring a person as anybody would ever want to know. Deepest condolences to his family, John

Ernie was one of the first UNMC College of Dentistry faculty members I met when I started teaching at the school. He quickly became my friend. We would talk about everything…dentistry, Husker football, politics, and life in general! He could always make me laugh with his great wit and sense of humor. We played many rounds of golf together and Ernie was the best partner and cart mate. He’s left a wonderful legacy and I will miss him greatly!
