Born on February 9, 1957, in North Platte, Nebraska to the late Booker T. Brown and Jesse Mae (Nelson).
Bettie attended North Platte High School and excelled through her academics graduating at the age of sixteen. Bettie was determined to achieve more after high school which led her to move to Lincoln, Nebraska to start her new journey at life.
Bettie’s professional career began in the insurance industry at State Farm and then she transitioned to manufacturing computer mainframe components at Control Data Corporation. When the company closed without notice, Bettie was determined to build her own empire which led to the nationally known cosmetology business named Hair Suite.
Bettie had enrolled at the College of Hair Design where her natural talents for doing hair and her charismatic professionalism attracted a clientele that continued to grow. Bettie graduated and later returned to teach courses on growing and protecting African American healthy hair at the college. Bettie would then work at salons in Lincoln, Sheer Design and Jai Jai’s Barber Shop to name a couple while continuing to build her clientele.
Bettie’s passion for entrepreneurship continued to flourish, which directed her to open her very own brick & mortar hair salon on 27th Street to years later transitioning to commercial hair operations a few blocks away. Hair Suite was a pillar in the community and connected so many clients together in the vibrant salon spirit that she created. Bettie was known for always having a smile that would brighten the room. Bettie was more than a licensed cosmetologist to many of you. She was your therapist, your family counselor, your confidant, and your friend.
Bettie owned and operated Hair Suite for 40 years. A legacy that was solidified in Nebraska’s history. Bettie would go on to win various awards and honors in the hair industry and had traveled across the country to participate in prominent hair shows. Bettie displayed the true determination of excellence, compassion, and love for the community.
Bettie was proceeded in death by her father Booker T. Brown, Sr., mother Jesse Mae, and her uncle Booker T. Nelson.
Bettie is survived by her daughters Shonna Brown and Melissa “Myssy Brown” Zamora plus granddaughter Cushiera Usher. Siblings include Chadie M. Holmes (Raymond), Honor “Oliver” Joe Brown, Tea Brown, Leander “Mike” Brown, Isaiah “Ike” Brown, Joe Nathan “Tom” Brown (Tammy), and Jennifer Brown.
Bettie leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday February 7th, 2026, at 1:00 PM, at Metcalf Funeral Chapel, 245. North 27th St.
