Obituary

Alice C. Thorell

January 24, 1942 - May 25, 2025

Alice C. Thorell, 83, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, in Ashland, Nebraska.

Born in Callaway, Nebraska, to John and Avis (Uhlman) Cooley, Alice grew up in Lexington and dedicated her life to education and family. Over the course of her long and respected teaching career, she served in classrooms across Nebraska—25 years in Ashland, 5 years in Callaway, and 2 years in Huntley—impacting the lives of generations of students.

Alice was known for her charming wit, intellectual curiosity and love of reading. A gifted listener with a classic sense of style reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, she brought both elegance and authenticity to everything she did. She could be feisty when it mattered and was truly a force all her own.

In the classroom, Alice ruled with clarity, fairness, and high expectations, while always caring deeply for her students. Her blend of discipline and high standards left lasting respect and affection.

Alice was authentically and unapologetically herself, a quality she shared with her late husband, Dewayne Thorell, and one that her family deeply admires and aspires to emulate.

She is survived by her son Corey (Ronilynn) Thorell of Belton, Texas; daughter Lori Thorell of Bangkok, Thailand; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren and her sister Sharon (David) Jordening of Germantown, Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dewayne; her son Todd Thorell; her brother Kenneth (Mary) Cooley; and sisters Zelma (Charles) High, Vivian (Fritz) Von Loh and her parents.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2025, at First Christian Church in Ashland, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

She was an awsome teacher. I took 7th and 8th grade English. She was stern, but wonderful. I was set for the rest of my high school education. I am saddened by this news. May the family always carry fond memories. I know I will.

This woman here. We didn’t know it yet, especially when we were young evil teenagers, but she was shaping us into bada$$ strong women. I still remember the hug I got when I came back from Iraq. She told me that she had been waiting for me to realize that I had “IT” all along.

Mrs Thorell was my high school English teacher. I learned what sarcasm and wit was from her, as well as literature and grammar. She was a force to be reckoned with! Condolences to the family.

I don’t know where I would be without Mrs. Thorell. Of course her academic standards and the belief we could achieve them and held us accountable to them set me up for success in college. But what she did for me in that quiet moment alone in the classroom, when she knew I was struggling with home life and social life, and simply said, “It will be different when you go to college. You will thrive there and find your people,” was give me hope and a drive to get to that magical place. And knowing she really saw me and believed in me, made me stand a little taller and have a smidgen less shame. She was one of a kind and left an indelible mark on me. Sending my deepest condolences to her family. ❤️
