Sam married his wife, Sharon, in Minden, Nebraska, and they later moved to Lincoln, where he began his career with Burlington Railroad. He dedicated 45 years to the railroad before retiring as a crane operator.
Sam enjoyed spending time with family, watching western TV shows, tinkering in the garage, and riding his John Deere to mow the lawn. He loved playing cards with ‘the boys’, his group of retired Burlington Railroad friends who gathered weekly for cards. He also loved to draw and enjoyed making special cards for friends and family.
He will be remembered most of all as his grandchildren’s #1 fan. Watching them play sports throughout the years brought him tremendous joy and pride. Grandpa held a very special place in the hearts of all his grandchildren, and the memories they made together will be cherished forever.
Family members include wife Sharon of 61 years and daughter Jill (Jeff) Van Dusen. Grandchildren Corbin (Ali) Van Dusen of Elkhorn NE; Chris Van Dusen (Alexa Fernandez) of La Vista, NE: Camryn Van Dusen (Tyler Woodward) of Springfield, NE; Jherika (Devin) Vodicka of Surprise NE. Great-grandchildren Jaxtyn and Brixtyn Vodicka. Sister Connie, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Helen Russell, son Jerry Russell, brothers Larry, Ronald and sister Betty.
Memorial services to be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026 at St. Marks Methodist Church, 8550 Pioneers Blvd., Lincoln, Dan Safarik officiating. Memorials to St. Croix Hospice, Organ donor or donor’s choice.
