He attended Northeast High School, Lincoln, and graduated in 1973. Greg received a Bachelor’s degree in History from University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Texas, Arlington. After graduation he researched and wrote for “Political Research Inc.” of Dallas (CEO-John Clements 1916-2009), a research group which published political statistics and the magazine World of Politics.
The couple moved back to Lincoln in 1985, and Greg began work at the Nebraska State Historical Society as a historian in the Historic Preservation Division and continued work there for over a decade. He also taught part-time history classes at University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Southeast Community College for a number of years. He enjoyed entertaining his students with humorous historical facts while presenting accurate political history.
He married Martha (Marty Vestecka) Miller May 17, 1980, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Lincoln.
Greg had a deep love for his Christian faith and Christ Lutheran Church. He traveled to Kyrgyzstan twice with a Lutheran Church group and helped in repairing an orphanage.
His hobbies included reading military history, meeting up with his rugby teammates, playing miniature war games, loved the Chicago Cubs and playing with his grandsons.
Survivors include a brother, Stephen Miller and sister-in-law, Lauren Miller of Rincon, Georgia, daughters Hannah L. Mort (husband Mike) of Omaha, and Shannon A. Spence (husband Zac) and grandsons Cameron and Riley Spence of Lincoln. Spouse/Friend Marty Vestecka Miller, nephew Sam Miller of Portland, Oregon, niece Katie Davis (husband Sean) of Rincon, GA, and their children Chesney, Lucas, Brooklyn Rose and Paisley Grace and Charlotte Kate, Blake and Madison.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Christ Lincoln Church (4325 Sumner St, Lincoln, NE 68506).
