Obituary

Lowell Alan Vestal

July 20, 1952 - September 19, 2018

Lowell Alan Vestal, 84, died September 19, 2018 in Lincoln after a brief battle with cancer. Born July 20, 1952. He received a BA in journalism from the University of Nebraska in 1956 and was then commissioned a 2nd LT in the US Army. Though he began his professional life as a magazine editor he spent most of his career as a “hands-on” real estate manager.

Lowell always believed in and supported organizations, whether as a dedication patriot serving his country, in politics through the Republican Party, in community service through the Downtown Kiwanis Club, by expression his religious beliefs at Westminster Presbyterian Church, in cultural activities on the Lincoln Municipal Band Board or fraternally at Lincoln Masonic Lodge 19, to name a few of his affiliations. He contributed wholly in time and talents to each of his memberships and, as one fellow Kiwanian said, “He loved the idea of perfect attendance.”

Lowell contributed financially to many groups but to none more generously than to his university alma mater. He established a fund for students and faculty at the College of Journalism and Mass Communication who are working on depth reporting or documentary projects. Most recently he helped create the General John J Pershing historical exhibition in the lobby of the Pershing Military and Naval Science Building on UNL City Campus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Lowell Vestal Depth Reporting Fund through the University of Nebraska Foundation.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, September 26, 2018, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd, Lincoln, NE.
