Terry was a 1964 graduate of Lincoln Northeast High School, where he was inducted into the LNE Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. He continued his education at Nebraska Wesleyan University graduating with his BA in 1968. He finished his education at UNL where he got his Masters in Secondary Ed./Adm in 1975.
Terry spent ten years in public education as a teacher, coach, and administrator serving the communities of Lincoln, Malcolm, and Spokane, Washington. He spent eleven years employed at the Lincoln Journal Star Printing Co. as a circulation zone manager and coordinator of the Newspaper in Education program. Prior to his retirement in 2011 Terry was employed for 18 years at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.
Terry loved kids and baseball and was a lifelong loyal Kansas City Royals fan and enjoyed being involved with Lincoln youth baseball (Babe Ruth baseball board of directors’ member 12 years and Lincoln Legion baseball association member). Served on the Lincoln YMCA Youth Advisory committee and volunteer parent softball coach. Certified boys & girls’ basketball official for 20 years and a former member of the Eastern Nebraska Officials Association. He and Jan worked as UNL football event staff employees for 21 years. After retiring they spent numerous winters in Arizona where he enjoyed being a Tempe Diablo volunteer ushering LA Angels spring training baseball games.
He served on the Edenton Homeowner’s Association board and enjoyed helping with the upkeep of the park and commons area. He and Jan were also active in the Sheridan Lutheran Church Backpack program providing weekend food for Holmes Elementary School students and their families.
Former member of the Lincoln Track Club and participant in several Lincoln and surrounding community road races.
Survivors include his wife Jeanette (Jan), son and daughter-in-law Andy & Mary Monk of Barrington, Illinois. Two grandchildren Abigail and William Monk both of Barrington, Illinois. Preceded in death by parents, son Toby Monk, sister Janice Holady, and stepfather Lloyd Racek.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Sheridan Lutheran Church, 6955 Old Cheney Rd. Private burial.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Roper and Sons South Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Dr.
Memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in loving memory of son Toby Monk (1971-1984) or the City of Lincoln Food Bank program.
