Obituary

Monte Draper

December 12, 1954 - March 16, 2026

Monte Eugene Draper, 71, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on March 16, 2026. Monte was born on December 12, 1954, in Lincoln to Charles and Peggy Draper.

Monte grew up in Lincoln and proudly graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1973. A lifelong Rocket, he held deep pride in his school and community. Monte went on to become a dedicated electrician for over 50 years, building a reputation as an incredibly hard worker.  He was steady, reliable, and always willing to lend a hand. His work ethic was unmatched, and he instilled that same commitment and integrity in his children. Monte took great pride in working alongside his son Chadd on jobs over the years; those times spent working together were some of his favorites.

Monte married Karen Draper in 1981. Though they later divorced, they remained close friends throughout his life.

Monte was an avid Nebraska Women’s Basketball fan, supporter and a season ticket holder for many years. Above all, Monte adored his grandchildren. They were his greatest joy, and he did everything he could to attend their sporting events, school activities, and milestones. His presence—always wearing one of his beloved Hawaiian shirts—was a constant at every holiday and celebration.

Monte also had some truly great one‑liners, the kind of quick humor that could lighten any moment and always left people smiling. He loved birthday traditions of getting SnoBalls from Topper Popper. And Monte could never pass up a “good deal” from an infomercial, something that will forever make his family smile. Those unexpected gadgets and gifts became cherished inside jokes, reminders of his big heart and the joy he brought to everyday life.

Monte had a gift for noticing the little things in life. He kept daily notes and marked important occasions in the small pocket notebook he carried everywhere. His shirts always needed a pocket, just the right size for his notebook, pens, electrical tester and glasses. Over the years, Monte saved every newspaper clipping, and every card from his children and grandchildren. He documented his life with care, preserving memories, milestones, and moments that were meaningful to him. These keepsakes are now a treasured reflection of the wonderful life he lived and the deep love he held for his family.

Monte is survived by his sons Ryan (Leslie) of Lincoln and Chadd (Cassandra) of Malcolm; his daughter Laura of Lincoln; his grandchildren Ryleigh, Tyler, Cole, Hudson, Brody, Maddox, Charlee, Aysha, and Ocean; sister Penny Graul (Mark Porter); former wife Karen Draper; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Peggy Draper; his brothers Kendall and Randy; and his brother‑in‑law Bob Graul.

I’m sorry to hear of Monte’s passing. I worked with Monte for about 10 years. He was always fun to talk to and had that infectious laugh and humor. He was always a good friend to me. He talked about his kids and grandkids a lot. I recently had some extra tickets to a Nebraska men’s basketball game and asked him if he would like go. He said no! I only watch the women! That was Monte. He will be missed!

I am so sorry to hear about Monte’s passing. Although I knew Randy better, I never saw Monte when he didn’t want to stop and talk. You, Monte, and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Lincoln NE will miss him

I used to love to come to Lincoln every summer growing up while our Dad was in the Navy. We would stay with Grandma Fern and always get together with our Aunts, Uncles and cousins. It was always fun. As teens we moved back to Lincoln. I thought Monte was cool in high school but he was always nice to us.
