Matthew S. Cook

August 13, 1971 - May 18, 2025

With hearts filled with sorrow, yet comforted by the hope of the gospel, we announce the passing of Matthew Scott Cook, age 53, in Lincoln, NE, on May 18, 2025. Matthew was born in Beatrice, NE, on August 13, 1971, to Norma Lou and Gary Cook.

Matthew was a loving husband, son, father, uncle, and brother. Throughout his life, he found joy in playing, watching and coaching volleyball, a passion that followed him. He went on to mentor others and stay connected to the game he loved. Known for always lending a helping hand and offering a listening ear, he constantly put others before himself, embodying kindness and selflessness in everything he did. He had a deep love for cooking and proudly held the title of the family’s “gravy king,” delighting everyone with his culinary creations. In his downtime, he enjoyed cheering on Nebraska sports and the Kansas City Chiefs, never missing a game and always supporting his teams with unwavering loyalty.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Cook, and two daughters, Mercades and Ruby Shockley of Lincoln; sibling Nichole Scholtens and her husband Gregg; and nephew and niece, Bryce and Delaney, of Springfield, MO. Along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins, he is also preceded in death by his grandparents and uncle.

A Celebration of Matthew’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel, 4300 O St, Lincoln, NE. Matt and I graduated High School together, one memory of many stands out in my mind…Matt broke the key off in my ignition while my car was running in my driveway at my house. I will always have the best memories of him, we had many laughs together, he was such a great person, we always kept in touch through Facebook over the years. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Matt, my dear friend, will forever have a piece of my heart. Sarah and the girls were so loved by him. This will be a rough time for all who loved him.
