John C. Angle

August 22, 1923 - September 23, 2008

John C. Angle, 85, Lincoln, died Tuesday (9-23-08). Born in New York City (8-22-23) to Everett E. Angle, M.D. and Catharine Elizabeth Dodge. He was retired Chairman of the Board and CEO of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of New York City. He is a graduate of Lincoln’s public schools and the University of Chicago, a third-generation Nebraskan and is the second Nebraskan to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He served as an Air Force weather officer during World War II and the Korean War.

John Angle was vice president and actuary of Woodmen Accident and Life Company and a director of the Fremont National Bank and Trust Company. John Angle headed the annual drive of the United Fund, the Lincoln Community Council, the Nebraska Actuaries Club and served as a director of the Lincoln Foundation, Lincoln General Hospital and the Lincoln Symphony.

John Angle’s efforts on behalf of his profession have included tours of duty as Director of Publications for the Society of Actuaries and its Board of Directors. He has also served on the boards of directors of the Society of Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries. He for some years was head of the United States delegation to the governing Council of the International Actuarial Association.

While in New York with Guardian Life, Mr. Angle was a member of the board of directors of the Life Insurance Council of New York, the Health Insurance Association of America, the American Life Council, and the Fifth Avenue Association. He was the initial president of the 14th Street—Union Square Business Improvement District—the first such organization in New York City.

John Angle chaired the design and construction the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in the 1990’s. He has been active in providing academic support for UNL. He has joined with others in promoting Nebraska Trails.

John Angle is survived by his wife Catherine Sellers Angle and children Margaret Susan Angle of Scottsdale AZ and James Sellers Angle of Minneapolis, MN, grandchildren Chelsea and Alicia Angle, Stephanie Bonifield and three great grandchildren of Phoenix, AZ.

Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (10-1-08) Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 6001 ‘A’ Street. The Rev. Catherine Scott officiating.
