Obituary

James E. Jackson, Sr.

September 4, 1948 - January 28, 2026

James Edward Jackson, Sr. peacefully entered eternal rest on January 28, 2026, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born on September 4, 1948, to Crozier and Marie (Martin) Jackson in Bainbridge, Georgia.

James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was the owner of Jai Jai’s Hair Salon, which he operated for 36 years. Through his work, James built lasting relationships and meaningful connections throughout the Lincoln community—connections rooted in kindness, conversation, and genuine care for others. He loved golfing and fishing and cherished time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. James loved his wife, Barbara, deeply and openly. Through seasons of joy and through the hardest days, they stood faithfully by one another’s side—leaning on each other, sharing strength, and facing every moment together with love.

James is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Chassidy (John Goodwin) Jackson-Goodwin; son, James E. (fiancé Tisha Weaver-Clark) Jackson, Jr.; grandchildren, Jaida Jackson, Sajai Jackson, and Amarion James Jackson, John Goodwin, Trinity Goodwin; sister, Brenda Stocks; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Crozier Jackson, Melvin Jackson Sr., son Eric Tillman.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Buffett Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for the exceptional care that allowed James precious time with his family following his leukemia diagnosis in 2020. After years of courage, resilience, and unwavering faith, James was called home by God as a faithful servant—his earthly fight finished, his victory secured.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:7

Moving to Lincoln back in the 80’s I met Jai and his beautiful family. He was a gentle giant among men. One who stood tall in the community and was very active in church. There was no doubt that he loved his family or of their love for him. Our children grew up together and remain friends. James “Jai” Jackson remains the epitome of what God intended man to be. This is a great loss but he leaves a full and rich legacy. I send my love and prayers to you, Barbara, Chasity, Jai Jr and the entire family.

My heartfelt sympathy & condolence goes out to the “Jackson” family. l met Jai Jai way back in the day when I moved to Lincoln from the city. There was only one Barber Shop in town on “R” St. and that’s where all the old men went. So after Jai Jai’s open up, it gave us youngsters some place to go get a nice cut and shave. Rest – N – Peace: my friend, my brother, my barber!!!

To the Jackson family- Our heartfelt condolences go out to you during this time. I will always remember Jai Jai for his kindness, his laughter and his quiet strength. Through my relationship with Chassidy and being apart of your family for well over three decades, I was lucky enough to know him not only as a father figure, but as someone who truly welcomed others with an open heart. He was always there for my own family during the ups and downs. Without him realizing, he showed me more by simply the way he lived and loved. Both he and Barb showed me that I could always have more within myself-more strength, more generosity, more courage—lessons that I still carry until this day. I am deeply grateful to have known him. Holding the family close to my heart.

Jai Jai’s Hair Salon was a place where you were welcomed with a greeting, followed by a smile. When serviced at this establishment you knew you were going to leave not only looking good but feeling good. I was offered great life lessons in my earlier years which I communicate to my children now. My fondest memory is every time I sat in the chair Jai would tell me he hoped I wasn’t thinking about a hair wrap because it took too long for my hair to dry. All the staff would laugh but I got the hook up and looked fly all week. Condolences to the family. #Classiest Man Ever.

I can remember as a little child going to visit Jai Jai’s for my siblings’ and mom’s hair. I think it may be one of my earliest memories of the community (outside of our home). Mr. Jackson was always kind, and silly, and had a calming presence – as are all members of the Jackson family. I know, he was well loved, and he will truly be missed by all. God, please bless the family and friends with comfort and strength to get through this time and the coming days, until they are reunited with their father, husband, family member, and friend. Amen.

To the Jackson Family, Jake and I wish to express our sincere condolences. We were so sorry to learn of JJ’s death. We had the pleasure of seeing him at a gathering in August. He expressed thanks to the Lord for allowing him to still be here. JJ brought excitement and a new sense of style for members of the African American community when he opened Jai Jai’s Barber Shop. He was kind, accommodating and well respected in the community. He leaves a legacy of integrity and love. May God comfort your hearts and give you His peace and strength to face the days ahead. We are grateful for the life of Mr. JJ Jackson. Dolores and Jake Kirkland, Jr.

JJ was a pillar in the Lincoln community as the operator of Jai Jai’s. I always admired JJ not only because of the example he set as a Black American man leading a successful business in Lincoln, Nebraska, but primarily for the example he set as a husband and father. While I have memories of JJ from his shop, the greatest lasting memories come from interacting with JJ as he supported his daughter Chassidy and son JJ Jr. during their high school activities. He was always so encouraging of everyone and so proud of them! My heartfelt condolences to JJ’s family.
