Obituary

Douglas “Doug” Kent Erlandson

November 4, 1946 - October 7, 2024

Douglas “Doug” Kent Erlandson, 77, of Lincoln passed away on October 7, 2024. Born November 4, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois to Gerald and Anna (Schlichting) Erlandson. He graduated from Wheaton College in 1968 and completed his doctorate in philosophy at John Hopkins University in 1972.

But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?
“Shall what is formed say to him who formed it,
Why did you make me like this?”

Romans 9:20

Doug taught at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln from 1972 until 1980 and at Southeast Community College from 1994 until 2013. From 1983 through 1989, he served as a pastor in the Reformed Church in the United States in South Dakota and Ohio.

Doug was reared in a Christian home but rejected the faith for 12 years. When his teaching assistant at the university confronted him with the Gospel, Doug argued mightily against it, particularly the concept of election, but the Holy Spirit prevailed.

On September 12, 1978, Doug acknowledged the sovereignty of God and the truth of Romans 9:20: But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, Why did you make me like this?”

Following his conversion, Doug attended Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia, where he met his wife, Ruth Elizabeth. They were married on February 21, 1981.

Doug was a teacher, a preacher, a writer, a musician, a marathon runner, a train enthusiast, and a lifelong Cubs fan. He enjoyed playing board games and was fiercely competitive. At heart, however, he was a humble man who loved God and his family.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents and brothers. He is survived by his wife, two adult children, family and friends.
