Stephen Howard “Steve” McKelvey

May 9, 1949 - August 27, 2026

Stephen Howard “Steve” McKelvey, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was born on May 9, 1949, in Lincoln. He graduated from Lincoln High School (1967) and Nebraska Wesleyan University (1971).

Steve married Roberta (“Robin”) Scheidies on June 3, 1972. He is survived by his wife; his children, Matt McKelvey and husband Rein Nulud, Sarah Rosa and husband Scott, Lisa Neddenriep and husband Wade, and Sam McKelvey and wife Liz; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Fran McKelvey.

Steve began his career as a teacher and coach in Bruning, Nebraska, before joining the University of Nebraska football coaching staff. He later spent 35 years with the Nebraska Bankers Association, where he led its insurance services subsidiary and developed lifelong friendships with bankers throughout Nebraska.

A standout athlete, Steve competed in three sports at Lincoln High School and a two-sport athlete at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was inducted into the athletic halls of fame at both institutions. He also helped establish Babe Ruth Baseball in Lincoln and served as its president from 1982 to 2024.

Steve enjoyed golfing, fishing, attending sporting events, traveling with family and friends, and cheering on his grandchildren in their many sports and activities.

Steve will be remembered for his commitment to family, his lifelong friendships, and the many people he mentored through athletics, business, and his community.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Thursday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Friendship Home of Lincoln where Steve served on the board for several years.
