Richard “Jon” Verdal Marshall

December 28, 1952 - March 22, 2026

Richard “Jon” Verdal Marshall was born on December 28, 1952, in Valentine, Nebraska. He was a proud member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe (Sicangu Oyate) in Rosebud, South Dakota. Jon was born to Arthur Marshall Sr. and Susan Little Soldier and was the second youngest of five children who survived into adulthood, with five additional siblings passing in childhood. From Arthur’s earlier relationship, Jon also had six half-siblings who were part of his extended family.

Jon graduated from Valentine High School in 1970. In his youth, he was a semi-professional boxer and was also active in basketball, football, and baseball. After graduating, he joined the United States Army and was deployed around the world, helping establish Army bases during his service.

Following his military service, Jon worked alongside his brother Willard Marshall on the railroad and in construction before eventually settling in Lincoln, Nebraska. There, he met the love of his life, K-Jo (Kathy). The two were married on a rainy day, June 11, 1983. Jon and Kathy shared more than 40 years of marriage and raised two sons, Aden and Seth.

Jon worked as a semi-truck driver and dispatcher for more than 25 years. He concluded his career with Nebraska Game and Parks in 2020. Jon was also a dedicated member of the local Indigenous community and served for many years on the Indian Board of Education.

Jon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathy Jo Marshall (VonEhwegen); his parents, Arthur Marshall Sr. and Susan Little Soldier; his siblings Adeline Bracha, Hattie Mae One Star, Willard Marshall, and Linda Lurz; his half-siblings Adam, Arthur Jr., Lawrence, Garfield, Veronica, and Grace; and his niece, Brooke Nelson.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons, Aden (Rebekka) Marshall and Seth Marshall; his bonus daughters, Tiffany Martinez and Edith Alvarado; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family invites everyone who knew and loved Jon to attend his Celebration of Life, which will be held at the Indian Center, Inc. (1100 Military Rd., Lincoln, NE 68508) on April 4 at 11:30 a.m.

Please join us in honoring and celebrating his life and the lasting memories he leaves in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, we ask for a fantastic Husker football season! Go BIG RED!

We became friends with Jon and Kathy through First Plymouth church, attending many family events- camp, activity nights, classes- together with their family as our kids grew up. It was a lot of fun, and we came to know Jon as a generous, kind and good- humored man. He also was in possession of the coolest genuine 70’s disco platform shoes- he loaned them to our son for a ’disco dance night’ party. We are sad to know that Jon has gone on, but trust that Jon and Kathy are happily together again now, forever. RIP friends.

Richard was a dear friend and coworker; I enjoyed every occasion that we shared time and conversation together whether it was at Mahoney State Park, the Lincoln Parks office, or the agency front desk. We shared many stories as well as a love for Husker football and even LSU baseball. Any time LSU made the College World Series Richard would call me to ask if I was going to pretend to be a LSU fan so that I could get some good gumbo at the tailgate parties in Omaha. I have a great respect for Richard and I will miss him. RIP my friend.

I met Richard at the front desk of Game and Parks on my very first day, 8 years ago. He was welcoming, friendly, and made me feel at ease going into a new job. I loved coming down to the front area to say ‘hi’ and shoot the breeze with him while waiting for folks coming for meetings. He was always kind and treated all with kindness. He will be missed greatly and I was glad to have met him!
