Robert McLaran “Mac” Sawyer, age 94, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2024, with his wife of 68 years, Patricia “Pat” Sawyer (nee Covert) by his side. He was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, to Harrie (nee Alcock) Sawyer and Lee McLaran Sawyer. He is predeceased by his parents and sisters Emilie Alcock Sawyer and Eloise McLaran Sawyer. Mac grew up in Saint Louis and graduated from Saint Louis University High School in 1948. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1952, obtained a Master’s degree from University of Illinois in 1953 and was awarded a PhD in 1966 from the University of Missouri. Mac enjoyed a long and very fulfilling teaching career with 39 years as Professor of Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In addition to teaching and mentoring, Mac published numerous articles and books including Centennial History of the University of Nebraska Volume II. The Modern University, for which he was known as the historian of the University of Nebraska. Mac maintained close friendships with many of his former students. Mac served in the United States Army from 1953-1955.

Mac was an avid reader of fiction and history. He enjoyed ham radio and trap shooting. In retirement he served on two health licensing boards. Mac’s family was his true love and focus. He spoke with his children daily and always wanted an update on each grandchild and great grandchild. Annual vacations to Bunker Hill with family and lifelong friends were beloved. Mac cherished his time at the beach with his kids and grandkids and was always quick to share a story or historical reference. His family will be forever grateful for the supportive, kind, and generous role model he provided.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Home Instead and CHI Hospice who helped Mac live comfortably at home.

A private memorial service will be held to honor and remember Mac.
