Obituary

Reverend Christopher Burt Morton

April 3, 1961 - March 18, 2024

Reverend Christopher Burt Morton died March 18, 2024, in Lincoln, NE. He was born April 3, 1961, and lived in Cranford, NJ, for the first 13 years of his life.

Graduating from Perrysburg High School in Perrysburg, OH in 1979, and Ohio University in Athens, OH, in 1983. He attended Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, KY, from 1991-1993 and became ordained to Christian ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1993. Chris was married 26 years to Kathy Hintz, the mother of his two fantastic children, then was blessed to be partnered with his beloved Julie Jones for the last ten years of his life.

Numerous justice-focused organizations benefited from his consulting, and many ecumenical and interfaith institutions, as well as local and regional Disciples Church institutions were blessed with his leadership and service throughout his 35-year career in Iowa, Kentucky, Indiana, Minnesota, Washington State, and Nebraska. Chris has been the Christian Church (DoC) Regional Minister for Nebraska since 2018.

Chris was a lover of jazz music, theater and film, travel, and hiking and exploration of the outdoors, where he found solace and spiritual connection. In his own words, “I try to be a loving partner, father, sibling, uncle, friend, colleague, and minister.”

Preceded in death by parents George W Morton, Jr (1969) and Phyllis B Morton (2019). Survived by his partner Julie Jones, children Lucas Morton and Amy Morton, his five older siblings Karen McCoy, David Morton, Steve Morton, Tricia Morton, and George Morton, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Chris left us way too soon. The world has lost a remarkably committed advocate for peace and justice.

We will be Celebrating his Life on April 3, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Christian Church, 1645 N. Cotner Blvd., Lincoln, NE, 68505, lunch to follow. The service will be live-streamed and recorded.

Kris was a good friend, a partner in my recovery. I was saddened when he moved away but it was what he was called to do. He will live on in the hearts and minds if so many he touched. Till vallhalla brother. Fair winds and following seas. Rest now in peace we have your watch.
