John “Dan” Michaelson II

February 8, 1942 - February 11, 2022

John “Dan” Michaelson II, 80, of Lincoln, passed away on February 11, 2022. He was born on February 8, 1942, in Lincoln to Eugene and Bernice (Knapp) Michaelson. Dan proudly served in the United States Navy for 20 years.

He was a talented and accomplished musician participating in the Christ UMC Church Brass and Choir, the Community Concert Band, and the University of Nebraska Marching Band. While in the United States Navy Dan directed many concert, jazz, and rock bands. His last duty station was as an admin for the Navy Band, where he directed the Sea Chanters Chorus. Dan was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and of the UNL Alumni Band as a participant and officer. Dan loved going to Cornhusker home football games with his son, Geoff. Something special that they got to do together for 35 years. He and Jerrie enjoyed being a part of the St. Mark’s Family Faith Fellowship Group for over 35 years. He enjoyed helping people and did so with the Lincoln Literacy Council. Playing cribbage and working crossword puzzles were hobbies he enjoyed, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Family members include his wife of nearly 54 years, Jerrie; son Geoff (Angela) Michaelson; grandchildren Kaitlyn and Isaac Michaelson, all of Lincoln; brother Bruce Michaelson; brother in-law Bob (Barbara) Bell; nieces and nephews, Dani (Sid) Staats, Mitchell Michaelson, Elaine (Dave) Drummer, Rae Jean (Scott) Proescholdbell, and Scott (Karen) Bell; great nieces and nephews, Anderson, Zamaria, Vivienne, Josh, Cassia, Rachel, Kenna, J.J., and Grant; numerous extended family and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Celebration of Life to be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4530 A Street, Lincoln (10). Rev. Richard Randolph, Ph.D officiating.

Memorials may be given to the Christ UMC Music Department or Toys for Tots.

So sorry to hear about this loss. I was in the Cornhusker Marching Band from 1978-1983. I remember him very well!! He was a great guy!! I was a blessing to have known him. He and your family will be in my prayers!!

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m sure he’s greatly missed. I played trumpet in the same years that Dan was in the Cornhusker Marching Band. I admire that he did that after he’d already had an accomplished military career. His smile and enthusiasm for music and marching were contagious. He was a great example to us.

I have known Dan since grade school at Huntington. Like many nowadays, this one hurts. At the last class reunion I spent quite a bit of time with Dan and Jerrie. The last time I was in Lincoln for a family funeral, Dan and Jerrie invited me for supper at their residence. I cherish those moments. Rest in peace my kind and gentle friend. You will be missed.
