Ross W. Gerding

April 22, 1922 - May 31, 2022

Ross W. Gerding was born April 22, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri to Fred E. and Minnie (Koetter) Gerding, and passed away on May 31, 2022.

He graduated as a veterinarian From the University of Missouri in 1951. He retired from the U.S. Department Animal Disease Eradication Division where he had served a Veterinarian in Charge for the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas. His efforts contributed to the eradication of many animal diseases and the development of effective governmental policies. During WWII, he served in the Field Artillery in the Philippine Islands. He was a member of AF & AM Lodge 43 in Jefferson City, MO, Post #3 American Legion. For many years, he volunteered as a track and field official for age group, master’s, high school, and university track meets. He was an avid golfer and frequently traveled to Florida, as well as South Carolina, and Colorado. He maintained his independence, his home, and supported his neighbors with snow blowing and lawn care through this last winter at the age of 99!

Ross was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Fred, and Stanley; his wife of 56 years, Shirley, son William Karl. He is survived by daughters, Barbara of Oklahoma, Kristine of Lincoln; Liz of Colorado and her husband Tom; son, Rex, and his wife Lori; grandchildren, great grandchildren; and his close companion and significant other, Jane Kinsey—with whom he spent time enjoying meals, friendship, and stimulating conversation.

Ross will be remembered as a smart (photographic memory), helpful, resourceful, pragmatic, frugal, witty gentleman, whose timely advice and recommendations were best taken seriously!

Memorial service and reception will be held at Eastridge Presbyterian Church (Lincoln, NE) at 11:00am on Friday, July 22, 2022.

In addition, there will be a Celebration of Life at Crooked Creek Golf Course (Lincoln, NE), from 3:30-6:30pm, also on Friday, July 22, 2022.

Memorials to Eastridge Presbyterian Church or Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. A scholarship will be set up in Ross’s name at the University of Missouri for a first-generation veterinary student.
