Richard “Dick” N. Thompson

November 20, 1933 - February 5, 2026

Richard “Dick” N. Thompson (92) of Lincoln, passed away February 5, 2026. Born November 20, 1933, in Newman Grove, NE, to Oscar and Gladys (Olson) Thompson. He graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1951 and attended Wayne State College where he met the love of his life, Dorothy “Dottie” Bilson Thompson. He graduated from UNL Law School in 1957, the same year he married Dottie.

He began his career at Cline Williams Law Firm in Lincoln and soon after welcomed his three children to the family in the early 1960s. They spent 20 happy years living on Bonacum Drive, frequently welcoming neighbors and friends of all ages. Some of his favorite memories were at Lake Okoboji in the summer and winter vacations in Puerto Rico with family and friends. He was passionate about good food, music, travel, his Scandinavian heritage, and the annual “Olson Family Picnic” at Looking Glass Church and the Headquarters Ranch in Bartlett. He had a zest for life. He never missed the nightly news and avidly read the papers and magazines. His mind was amazingly sharp until his final days. Known to them as “Pops”, he cherished every moment with his three beloved granddaughters. His long life is directly linked to the constant, patient, loving care of son Richard.

Family members include children Pamela Thompson (Peter Heckman), Colorado Springs, CO, Richard Thompson II, and Beth Smith (Clay), Lincoln. Granddaughters Sarah, Emily and Katie Smith. Sister Mary Burkes (Joel), Eaton, CO, Brother Dean Thompson (Venea), Greeley, CO. Nieces and nephews.

Private interment will be held in the spring.

Memorials may be sent to First Plymouth Church or to the University of Nebraska College of Law.

My Condolences to the Family. Dick will be missed by many. I have very fond memories how he enjoyed the flowers we planted each year in the yard. I enjoyed working for him taking care of the family’s lawn and landscaping on Woodsdale for many years. God bless. Rest in Peace.

Praise God for the life of Dick. I’ve only known Dick for the past two years, but am amazed at how hard he worked to try to help me and my new company (nfdynamics.com) be successful. Dick regularly talked with me about how much he cared about his family as his primary motivation. The world needs more people like Dick.

Friends, I share in the sadness that your family is experiencing today. Dick Thompson was a longtime personal friend, and we would visit frequently on the phone, with long conversations about all things Nebraskan. He had a great mind, a warm personality, and he was an American patriot. All of you were blessed to have him in your family. Dick Thompson was revered in our business community, and he lived his life in a way that added value, not just to himself, but to his hundreds of friends. It’s not often that we can say that we’ve lost an icon, but we can say that today. He left a touchmark that will endure forever, because everything he touched, improved. I remember our last dinner together at the country club; we had a wonderful day, and I will savor the memories for a long long time. It was a high honor to be his friend. It is now our responsibility to carry on the work and legacy of Dick Thompson. One day soon I hope we’ll get together again; that would touch my heart deeply, because I value all of you so highly.
