Obituary

Reshell Ray

March 23, 1962 - February 10, 2026

Reshell Denise Moore Ray peacefully passed away on February 10 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Born in 1962 to John and Emma Jean Moore, Reshell was the second oldest of five children. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, and later completed her Master’s degree at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

She met and married James Ray Jr., and together they built a beautiful life and raised five children. While devoted to motherhood, Reshell also built a remarkable professional career. She directed the Culture Center on UNL’s downtown campus for ten years before stepping into her role in Campus Student Involvement, where she faithfully served as Associate Director for 24 years.

Reshell absolutely loved her family and her students. She had an uncanny ability to be everywhere at once. Through a call, a text, or simply showing up, she made people feel seen, valued, and deeply loved, whether near or far.

Over her 34 years of service at UNL, she had the privilege of working with thousands of students. While she hosted numerous events featuring well-known guests such as Coach Boon, Larry the Cable Guy, and Lee Brice, her true passion was her students. She deeply believed in training the next generation, reminding them that they were the history-shapers.

Reshell also traveled hundreds of miles conducting leadership training for the Heartland Center. A visionary by nature, she was often found brainstorming new possibilities when plans needed to pivot. She will be remembered for her perpetual optimism, sound leadership, generous heart, and unwavering faith in God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ray Jr.; her sisters, Regina Savage and Rosalind Jordan; and her baby brother, Johnny Moore.

She is survived by her parents, John and Emma Jean Moore; her brother, Derrick Moore; her children: Rachel Ray, James Ray, Jonathan Ray, and his significant other, Casey Ogden; Rosalind Reloj and her spouse, Jeremy Reloj; Beccah Menter and her spouse, Jesse Menter; and beloved daughter, Rhani Henry.

She was the proud grandmother of fourteen grandchildren: Aiyana Ray, Aviyana Casteneda, Zendyn Scott, Aleah Ray, Teyha Ray, Jordan Ray, Emelle Reloj, Eliam Reloj, Miles Reloj, and Maxwell Reloj, Elliot Menter, Miyah Reshell Menter, Simeon Menter, and Sullivan Menter.

Her legacy of faith, leadership, service, and unconditional love will continue to shape generations to come.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday February 17th at 11:00 A.M. at Christ Place Church (1111 Old Cheney Rd, Lincoln). Family will greet family prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 A.M.

Memorials to the family for future designation.

Reshell and I have been friends since what feels like forever. I can’t remember a time when I didnt know her and the family. We laughed together, embarked on fad weight loss journeys together, worshipped the Lord together, and celebrated her beautiful family together. May God bless each of you, and comfort you in the days, the months, and the years ahead. Rest well my sister!

I was deeply saddened to hear of Reshell’s passing while I am overseas. My heart aches that I cannot be there in person to honor her beautiful life. While we grieve her loss here, I know she is rejoicing in Heaven and reunited with her beloved husband. Still, she will be so very missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing her. Reshell and I worked on many meaningful projects together at UNL, but more than that, we shared a treasured friendship that spanned decades. From the very first time I met her; when she received one of the Sue Tidball Human Potential Awards; I knew she was someone special. Over the years, we grew close, and I came to deeply admire her heart. She truly cared about those who were disadvantaged, overlooked, or simply in need of a friend. She had a rare gift of seeing the good in everyone and encouraging it to grow. Her positivity, compassion, and gentle strength touched so many lives. Reshell loved being a mom and a grandma. Her family was her joy, and she loved you all so deeply. My most heartfelt condolences to each of you as you walk through this difficult time. We will miss you, my dear friend. Thank you for the light and love you brought into our lives. May you rest in peace. Sriyani Tidball

Reshell was a very special colleague. In the mid 1990s, for several years we team taught a unique section of UNL’s Freshman Foundations program for first year students. Critical Moments in Diversity case stories challenged us and our students to engage with people from different histories, beliefs, racial backgrounds, and economic realities. Reshell was the “Mom” for so many students who came from the south, particularly African-American athletes, adjusting to Nebraska’s reality. Her kindness, guidance and leadership are well known at the university and in the Lincoln community. I join others who learned so much from her. And I appreciated her openness with learning from those different from her as well. She will be sorely missed. I will certainly miss our times when we caught up with each other over the years. Rest in power, Reshell.

I worked with Reshell at events such as the Chili Cook-Off and Desert Competition on East Campus from 2004-2007. She was always so kind, with a smile on her face, always! She will be dearly missed!

The times we spent worshiping the Lord together, were so special to my heart ❤️ We got acquainted with Reshell and James at our little church. Beautiful people who were a blessing in our lives! We enjoyed it when Reshell would come by, and the main topic was the Lord and next to it, our families then painting. She and Mike, my husband, would talk about the next job she had for him for him to paint. He loved the visits while he was there working. What a precious sister in the Lord with a heart of gold. She left alot of love for people here! ❤️

Reshell was a 1st cousin to me, through her father. My mother, her Aunt Margaret, could have been her twin! Reshell, Shelley, to us, was deeply loved, beautiful and held a heart of gold! She loved her children, grands, family, co-workers, community, life, living and God! She left many little fingers and foot prints to carry on! We will continue to pray for and with her children and parents. I know anyone reading this, who knew her, was left with a gem of knowledge and a heart full of love! Bless her soul! Love Always, Daryl and Geneva《Bea)

Reshell made going to UNL worth it. From the Culture Center, and the Multicultural Affairs office, to UPC and the office of Student Involvement, Reshell helped guide us through trying times in politics and life. She was truly a blessing to all whom she touched. ❤️
