Mildred M. Mehmken

February 3, 1910 - May 2, 2013

Mildred M. Mehmken, age 103, of Lincoln, died Thursday (5-2-13) at Tabitha Health Care Services. She was born on February 3, 1910 in Edwardsville, IL to Louis and Minnie (Schlingman) Balke. Mil grew up in Edwardsville, IL and graduated from Edwardsville High School. She worked as a legal secretary after graduation.

On June 18, 1938, she married Herman O. Mehmken in Edwardsville, IL. In 1955, the family moved to Omaha where Mil and her husband were active members of their church. She was a founding and longtime member of Northwest Hills Church of Christ in Omaha and a member of First-Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln. She also was an active member of the Narcissus Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors of America.

In 1985, Mil moved to Lincoln and so enjoyed being close to her granddaughter, Megan. Mil was very creative and enjoyed crocheting, tatting, and making crafts. She also was an avid Husker football and baseball fan. She knew the stats on all the players. Mil faithfully attended the Husker home football games until age 90.

Mil is survived by her son, Roy Mehmken, and was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, parents, brother and sister-in-law, Ernie and Helen (Schlottman) Balke and her beloved granddaughter, Megan Lynn Mehmken.

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at First-Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 ‘D’ Street.

Memorials are suggested to First-Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 D Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68502 or Tabitha Foundation. Inurnment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha at a later date.
