Michael “Mick” Paul Pierce

September 24, 1944 - December 11, 2022

Michael “Mick” Paul Pierce, 78, of Lincoln, NE, passed away on December 11, 2022. He was born September 24, 1944 to Silas and Virginia Pierce at the Farragut Naval Training Station near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

The family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska when he was about 2 years old. He attended Lincoln Public Schools and graduated from Northeast High School in 1962 where he played on the state championship football team and earned All-State honors and played in the Shrine Bowl. In 1967 he graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University where he also played football and earned the Outstanding Freshman Award and several other honors. Mick was inducted into the Northeast and Wesleyan Halls of Fame for football. He was also the first FCA Coach of the Year. The post-collegiate sport of choice for Mick and many of those guys who had played together for years, was slow-pitch softball. A team was formed, and of course, they won many games, tournaments and state championships.

On December 28, 1967 Mick married Jane Frey from Gordon, Nebraska. They were blessed with a son, Cory, twin daughters Monica and Michaelle and a third daughter Amanda. Their four children married and went on to have fourteen grandchildren who filled their golden years with unending joy and activity. Cory and his wife Nikky have 4 sons, Silas, Dominic, Dante and Brody. Monica has a daughter Alexis and two sons, Sam and Luke. Michaelle has two daughters, Faith and Rebecca, and one son, Carter. Amanda and Austin have 3 sons, Pierce, Porter and Cole and one daughter, Lena.

Mick began his coaching career at Valparaiso in his last year at Wesleyan and was hired to also teach at the soon-to-be consolidated Raymond Central High School teaching history and art. He continued his career teaching psychology and history and coaching at North Bend Central High School for two years, then finished at Lincoln Southeast until he retired in 2004. His 1981 Southeast wrestling team placed third at State, which is still the highest finish for a Southeast wrestling team.

Mick became involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He became huddle leader at North Bend and Southeast High Schools. It was integral in the growth of Mick’s Christian faith through his relationships with other Christian coaches and athletes.

Mick’s summer jobs were working with the Amateur Athletic Union helping organize national and international wrestling tournaments that were held in Lincoln. In the summer of 1975 there was an international cultural exchange for wrestling teams with several foreign countries. Mick went with the team traveling to Turkey where he formed a friendship with a Turkish wrestler who came to Lincoln, obtained his US citizenship, graduated from UNO and ultimately wrestled for the United States at the 1984 Olympics, finishing in fourth place.

During the international exchange, Mick met a wrestling coach from Maine and a short time later they started the Nebraska-Maine Wrestling Exchange for high school wrestlers, which is still going on today.

After retiring from coaching many of you may have heard his booming voice announcing at many athletic events for Lincoln Public Schools.

Mick became a regional spokesperson for the Voice of the Martyrs, which is an organization seeking financial and spiritual support for persecuted Christians around the world. He spoke in several local churches helping bring awareness about the atrocities being carried out around the world in many countries that are hostile to Christianity.

In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Mick is also survived by his brother-in-law Darrell Frey, three nieces, seven nephews and many extended family members. Mick was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Virginia Pierce and sister Connie Pierce.

Mick was my teacher as well as our Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor. He encouraged me in my relationship with Jesus Christ. I remember he asked me to share my testimony at the adult FCA chapter breakfast. He picked me up and drove me to the breakfast. Coach Osborne was at the breakfast – I did not realize Tom Osborne was a such strong supporter of the FCA program.

It saddens me a great deal to hear about Mick’s passing. His importance in my life cannot be understated. He was my favorite teacher (Psychology–I enjoyed this class so much that for a short time I even thought I might want to major in Psych. Nah, too much science!), an inspirational FCA leader/sponsor (he used to good-naturedly tease me about the less-than-artistic posters I made for our meetings!), and probably the main inspiration for me becoming a teacher myself nearly 30 years ago. He was caring, fun, hilarious, and a good Christian man. May God bless his soul and his family.

Mick was the best eraser thrower that I knew. We sat in alphabetical order and the kid that sat behind me was always disruptive. I always paid attention when Mr. Pierce was writing on the blackboard. Many times that student got nailed by an eraser.

Mick was a one of a kind teacher, coach, and person had the honor of being on his first high school wrestling team. One memory was at a wrestling match he had a roll of athletic tape in his hand something in a match did not go to his liking he threw the tape straight down to the floor it bounced up and I think it hit the ceiling of the gym. Thanks for all the memories Mick

We were sorry to read of Mick’s death. I remember the good times we had together teaching at North Bend Central in the late 70s. I also remember Mick as doing things “the right way” and his great sense of humor. May the love of family and friends and your faith in God provide peace, comfort and hope.

In 87 or 88 at parent teacher conference time, & all the teachers were in the gym at card tables. My mother & I walked in and Mr. Pierce was using two small Styrofoam cups with the bottoms taken out as a pair of “binoculars,” & was ACTIVELY scanning the room. When he saw someone he knew he would put one of the cups down and wave (very enthusiastically). Once they waved back, he would pick up the cup & keep scanning. I remember my mom asking me, “Who is that?” I told her & then she looked at me & said, “WHAT is wrong with him?” I just laughed and told her, “Oh nothing. That’s just Mr. Pierce!!” She still tells that story!!! He was a great teacher!! Prayers to his family. May your memories bring you peace & comfort.

Mick and I have been lifelong friends having grown up in the same neighborhood dating back to the 50’s and later being teammates on the NWU football team. Quite the character but friends to all with always a story or memory to share. He was a late bloomer when it came to athletic ability but by the time he reached his senior year at LNE he was a very tough and talented defensive end on the 1962 state championship team. From there he just kept getting better both on the football field as well as the wrestling mat. Rest In Peace “Big Chickie”. Terry & Jan Monk

Sorry to hear about Coach/Mr. Pierce. He was a teacher and wrestling coach to me. Great guy. I remember one day I sassed him about something and he wrapped me in athletic tape and put me in a garbage can. I didn’t do that again. LOL
