Obituary

Marian Slaughter

February 7, 1928 - February 14, 2026

Marian Slaughter, 98, of Lincoln, passed away on February 14, 2026. She was born on February 7, 1928, in Ainsworth, NE, to Gerrit and Muriel (Stringfellow) Tyler.

Marian dearly loved her family and friends. These were the people who joined her in the activities that she loved.  Marian and her husband, Bill, belonged to “100 Club” which was a monthly dance club.  They played golf together with friends on Friday evenings at Hillcrest Country Club for “Twilight Golf” and she played on Thursday mornings for “Ladies’ Day”. For many years, she played in a bridge club on Tuesday nights and would often play bridge with her brother, Bob and his wife, Kathy which resulted in many bursts of laughter. Years ago she belonged to The League of Women Voters because she wanted to dive in and understand the issues of the day. She and her husband were avid Cornhusker sports fans and attended football games for many years. She stayed home to raise her children but went to work part-time at Citizen’s State Bank, then Gateway Bank. Eventually she was the manager of Construction Industries Credit Union and later Xelon Credit Union. She later was an accounting clerk in the Mechanical Engineering department of UNL, where she retired. She was an avid reader of books. She read the newspaper daily and watched the news on TV to satisfy her appetite for keeping herself informed as “she was the daughter of a newspaper man”. Marian loved her many dogs and they always brought joy to her life. She would meet friends for coffee through the years but more recently her family would meet at her at home for coffee and visiting.  She enjoyed regular Monday night dinners with family and gathering together for holidays and birthdays.

She is survived by her children Bill Slaughter, Lincoln; Tom (Lisa) Slaughter, Largo, FL; Jeanne (Jim) Zolbe, Lincoln; and Barb (Nathan) Murray, Cortland; brother, Van Tyler; sister-in-law, Kathy Tyler. Her grandchildren Chris Slaughter, Jill Hall, Mike Maness, David Slaughter, Mitch Slaughter, Lindsay Matz, Sam Murray and Terrill Murray. She has several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband William; her parents Gerrit and Muriel (Stringfellow) Tyler, step-mother, Mollia Tyler, sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Robert Gaston; brother Robert Tyler, sister-in-law Marge Tyler; sister- and brother-in-law Betty and Vern Miller; sister-and brother-in-law Mary and Bert Gonzales.

Aunt Marian had the sweetest voice and chuckle even when all the boys were boisterous. We enjoyed her tremendous hospitality every time we gathered and I’m sure she took seriously the role of elder sister to keep the family in touch. She will be missed.

When your family lived in Grand Island, my parents spent a lot of time with Bill and Marian. When I was employed at Hillcrest CC in Lincoln from 1968 to 1977, I had the chance to renew acquaintances with your parents. Please know that my deepest sympathies and my prayers are with all of you. I hope the memories you enjoy will help sustain you during this difficult time.
