Dorothy “Dee” Hughes

November 8, 1929 - December 10, 2013

Dorothy “Dee” Hughes, 84, of Lincoln entered eternal life December 10, 2013. Born November 8, 1929 in Valley, NE to Nellie (Pritchard) and Samuel C. Maxwell, Dorothy was a member of Unity Church of Lincoln and PEO.

Dee was a graduate of Omaha Central High School, earned a BA from Grinnell College of Iowa, MA from New York University, and took post graduate work at the University of California, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Colorado, the University of Norway, Oslo, Norway, and the Laban Center of Movement and Dance, London, England.

Dee taught physical education in the Lincoln Public Schools and was an associate professor of Theater Arts and Dance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1954 to 2000 where she taught ethnic, social, and ballroom dance to all ages.

She began and sponsored the Folk Dance and Orchesis groups at the UNL Theatre and Dance Department and in 1994 was recognized for 40 years of service to UNL.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband DeForrest R. Hughes in 1962, sisters Elizabeth Hobson, Harriet Clark, Phyllis Becker, and brother Lt. Colonel Samuel Maxwell. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, colleagues and friends.

Visitation at Fellowship Community Church, 8601 Holdrege Street, NE 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday December 27.

Family greeting from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, at Fellowship Community Church, with a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00. Lunch to follow.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to University of Nebraska Lincoln Foundation Dance Fund, Nebraska PEO Home, and Unity Church of Lincoln.
