Don Elliott

July 10, 1926 - November 11, 2012

Don Elliott, 86, of Alvo, Nebraska died Sunday, November 11, 2012. Born (7-10-26) in Elmwood to Earl and Effie (Ohms) Elliott. U. S. Marine Corps Veteran enlisted at age 17. He attended basic training and communication school before being shipped overseas. Served in the Tinnian, Siapan, and Okinawa campaigns and then was sent to Nagasaki, Japan for the clean-up. He celebrated his 20th birthday on a ship coming home after the war ended.

He and his brother Lee bought a repair business from Mabel Elliott after working for Johnny Elliott for several years. Elliott Brothers Repair served this area for many years. Lee died in 1977 and the business closed. Don worked for John Deere in Waverly for several years, then spent the rest of his working days working for Mick Bornemeier. Mick and Don remained good friends until the end. Married Minnie Roelofsz in June 1950. To this union a son Terry was born in 1951 and a daughter Connie in 1952. Don was active in the community. He served as fire chief, was water commissioner, coached little league and American Legion baseball. Mel and Bev Doran were special friends. Bev was his cousin and they shared many memories. Forrest and Lucille Hardnock showed him the true meaning of friendship.

Don is survived by his wife: Minnie; son: Terry (Sue) Elliott; daughter: Connie Cottam; sister: Ruth Jean Irons; grandchildren: Jason and Chris Cottam, Craig and Macaela Cottam, Gina Boveia, Joe Elliott; great grandchildren: Rhiannon Cottam and Wesley Cottam; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Lee, son-in-law Dave Cottam.

Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m. Thursday (11-15-12) Brethren Cemetery, rural Alvo, NE. Family requests casual attire.

Memorials to the family for future designation. No visitation.
