Obituary

David Long McEwen

July 13, 1949 - November 12, 2021

David Long McEwen went home to the Lord on November 12, 2021, at age 72.

Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”

Dave was born to Homer and Madeline on July 13, 1949, in Danbury Connecticut. As a youth he excelled in baseball and football and graduated from Southeast High School in 1967.

Dave met his wife Paula at Lefler Junior High. They graduated from Southeast High School in 1967 and were married February 6, 1971. Dave and Paula have three children, Tara, Ryan, and Timothy, eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In 1979 David cofounded McEwen Odbert Remodeling Company in Lincoln Nebraska. Many houses in and around Lincoln bear the craftsmanship of their 40-year venture.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving husband and father, Dave excelled at baseball, racquet ball and golf. He was an avid hunter, loved working in his yard, and could always be seen at his grandkid’s activities. After believing in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1973, he loved serving the Lord in ministry.  Dave had a heart for youth and always looked for ways to serve. In his later years Dave was the golf coach at Lincoln Christian School, working with his teams to improve their golf and build their character.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Madeline, and his brother Bill. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Paula, their children Tara (Dave Arbogast), Ryan (Amy), and Tim; and eleven grandchildren Alexa (Forrest), AJ (Katelyn) and Megan; Josh, Emma (Nathanael), Kate and Maggie; Max (Avery), Jack, Isabelle, and Sophia, as well as two great-grandchildren Stella and Emmitt.

To Paula and all your dear family, I am shocked and so saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. The passage from Roman 5 is so strong just as Dave was and is still strong in the Lord. A little later in Romans, Paul gives us some of the most comforting words to those who lose a beloved family member or spouse. Rom 14:7-9: “We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord: so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.” Dave lived with great gusto for the Lord while he was here on earth and he continues to live for the Lord as a zealot for the faith and a model for all of us to follow in his unflagging courage and faithfulness. May the God of all comfort hold you and all your wonderful family especially close in these days of grief and sadness and may you find peace in the Lord.

Tim, We are so sorry to hear about your father’s passing. We met him only a few times at your Fourth of July gatherings so long ago when your children and our grandkids were youngsters. He and your mother were such a gracious pair. Give her a hug for us.

My heart was broken with David’s passing. Not so much for him whose faith has taken him to a better place, but for his adoring family and the rest of us who are losing the ultimate husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was the role model cousin if ever there was one. I loved that impish grin and dimples when we were kids and it was still there the last time we met. God’s power of love and healing in your time of sorrow.

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21 Dave has now gained forever, time to be in the presence with his Lord & Savior. What a a inspiration Dave and you Paula, were to me soon after my coming to know Jesus Christ as our savior. Thank you. My deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers do you and your entire family Paula.

Paula, Tara, Ryan, and Tim I knew your Dad for many years and I am saddened with you at the passing of a great man who led by example and by his core beliefs in God. He is now at ‘rest’ with his beloved Savior Jesus. In that we smile through our grief and hope we will be used by God as he was. Pam and I offer our sympathy and joy at his ‘home-going’. Death, where is your sting?
