Obituary

Darwin Blue

July 26, 1942 - February 19, 2022

Darwin Blue, 79, of Lincoln, passed away February 19, 2022. He was born July 26, 1942, in Grand Island, NE, to Raymond E. and Ione (Bucy) Blue.

Darwin graduated from Shelton High School in 1960, Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1964, and went on to receive his master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado. He and his wife, Karen, moved to Denver, CO, to teach in the Jefferson County School District for 34 years, where Darwin received multiple outstanding teacher awards and was active in the teacher’s union throughout his career. Moving to Denver broadened his perspective, and while there Darwin became an advocate for fair housing, civil rights, and equality for all people. He was an active and passionate supporter of the Jefferson Unitarian Church and the Democratic Party. Darwin would call his daughters, every election, to remind them to vote. He retired and moved back to Lincoln, NE, in 1998, where he continued to serve as a substitute teacher for many years. Darwin loved spending time with his family and grandchildren (whom he truly adored), gardening, landscaping, and his koi pond. He enjoyed diversity in culture, people, food, and live music, all of which led to his love and appreciation for New Orleans, where he and Karen visited often. You could often find him enjoying local bands at the Zoo Bar in Lincoln, NE. Darwin had a tremendous gift for connection. He possessed an innate ability to relate to any person and could always find commonalities with people no matter where he was.

The Darwin Blue family is grateful to Sarah Schroeder, Dr. John Steuter, Dr. Ryan Shelstad, Dr. Mathue Baker and the LVAD heart team at Bryan Medical Center, Dr. Matthew Glathar with Lincoln Nephrology, Dr. Alan Berg with the Cancer Partners of Nebraska, and St. Croix Hospice for their compassion and excellent care.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Karen; children, Amanda Blue (Tony Scott) of Lincoln, Marni Dasbach (Bob) of Frankfort, IL; grandchildren, Logan Blue Dasbach, Maycie Janice Dasbach, Lincoln Blue Scott; brother, Duane Blue (Theresa) of Ridgecrest, CA; sister, Danece Meyer (Jim) of Bluehill, NE; nieces, nephew, brothers- and sisters-in-law, extended family and friends.

Mr. Blue was my science teacher at Golden Jr. High in the 80s. He was always respectful even when I wasn’t. He had the patience of a Saint.

Linda and I send our heartfelt condolences to Karen & family. We are so saddened to hear of his passing. We are so glad we got to see him at NWU’s homecoming last fall after a number of years with no direct contact. I knew Darwin since we pledged the same fraternity, PKT, in the fall of 1960. We had a chance meeting in Lakewood, CO shortly after moving there ourselves and maintained a close friendship through the years he, Karen, & family lived there. What a great friend and person he was, and we were fortunate to share his interests in Coloradans for Nebr., politics, and school and community events. We will greatly miss him.

Darwin was a good friend. Darwin was a kind and caring person. He always had time for you and would always make one feel comfortable in talking about most anything. Darwin was a kind person and one who had compassion for others. From what I know of Darwin he was a great teacher and a wonderful role model for our youth. My life has been enriched because of Darwin and his friendship. Darwin’s legacy is his family and loved ones who will carry on his decency and goodness. Darwin Blue truly made a difference in so many lives. May he now rest in peace with his younger brother Daryl.

We are so sorry for your loss. Seeing Darwin and Karen transform a bland backyard into a beautiful gem with such a great variety of cultivars was a joy to behold. The landscaping including the koi pond shows careful planning and a love for the outdoors. We are grateful to have had Darwin as a neighbor and for our friendly chats over the fence. Looking at the beauty he created will remind us every time of the wonderful and passionate person he was. Our thoughts are with you.
