Charles H. “Chick” Thorne

April 2, 1923 - October 2, 2021

Charles H. “Chick” Thorne, was born on April 2, 1923 and passed away peacefully with family members by his side on October 2, 2021. Chick had served Lincoln in many capacities, known as the President and CEO of First Federal Savings and Loan, where he was instrumental in making it possible that the time savings and loans were approved, when check writing first became available to customers. Chick also served on the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He was also active as Chairman of the Board of the Lincoln Foundation, also on the Board-of Directors of-the Nebraska Savings and Loan League, President for the Nebraska Mortgage Association and Nebraska Chapter 23 of the Appraisal Institute, YMCA, YWCA, Salvation Army, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and the Lincoln Country Club. Chick is a native Lincolnite and a 1941 Graduate of Lincoln High, where he met the love of his life Dorothy Jean Browne and they were married on August 3rd, 1945. Chick received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1947 and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. During WWII he was a trained U.S. Navy Pilot.

Chick’s favorite passion in life was playing golf at the Lincoln Country Club with his good friends Duggie Doyle, Governor Charlie Thone, and George Easley. His love for Photography grew throughout his life as he joined the Photography Club and met his good friend Tony Fleming. If you knew Chick you probably had your picture taken by him. Chick always had enjoyed spending a night on the town with his wife Dorothy Jean and taking his family on trips near and afar. Spending time socializing and playing cards with friends, attending every Husker football game, and celebrating family milestones was a significant part of his life. One of his favorite enjoyments was watching his children and grandchildren excel in their lifetime accomplishments. Chocolate cake was his favorite thing to eat.

Chick was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Jean Thorne and his daughter Nancy Deitemeyer. He is survived by his daughter, Sally Lummis (Del Lummis); son, Charles (Fred) Thorne l (Tamara Thorne); son-in-law, Kip Deitemeyer of Colorado Springs CO; 14 Grandchildren: Rachel L.Torres (Rafael Torres), Charles (Freddy) Thorne Jr II, Melissa B. Thorne, Joshua D. Thorne, Elizabeth N. Thorne (Michael Cook, Fiance), Kara A. Thorne, Sarah Rinne, Trey Rinne, Katy Rinne, Amy Schnack (Taylor Schnack), Christy Reid, (Darren Reid), David Deitemeyer (Heather Deitemeyer), Jeanie Polzer (Grant Polzer), Amy Riley (Pat Riley). 11 Great Grandchildren: Anthony Torres, Isaac Torres, Charles(Charlie)Thorne Ill, Fiona Thorne, Ellie Thorne, Reed Schnack, River Reid, Taylor Reid, Mason Deitemeyer, Logan Deitemeyer, and Jag Polzer.

Chick was always upbeat and supportive of community projects, athletics, and his church. Public Memorial Service will be held on November 5th, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Westminister Church.
