Zachary (Zach) John Hatgidakis peacefully passed away in the early morning of April 23rd, surrounded by love in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, to John and Marsha Hatgidakis, he was a beloved son and the eldest sibling, and a devoted brother to Samantha (Mark), Anna (Will), and Pete (Meghan). He was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Share a Memory or Condolence

My memories of Zach make me smile. For years, it was either Jesse over Zach’s house or Zach was over our house. There were many sleep overs, talks, laughter and snacks. He was such an interesting young person to talk with. Zach always had a kind soul. Although I haven’t seen Zach in several years, I always hoped the best for him. My condolences to his family and friends.

Zach, we met at Howe on the playground in 2nd grade, in 3rd grade we got seated next to each other which kicked off being best friends until 10th grade. During that time, we spent nearly every weekday and almost every weekend hanging out and having sleepovers. We played on the same ball teams, went to Shinder’s and got ball cards to trade, went to the music store for tapes and CDs, rode our bikes all over town, drew pictures, watched movies and played games. Most importantly we would make each other laugh until we couldn’t catch our breath or our sides hurt. Zach, thank you for being the best friend anyone could ask for, to make and share those memories with. You are, and will be missed.

It was quite a shock to hear about Zach. He was such a lovely boy and man, and a good friend to my son, John. In one of my favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption, there’s a quote spoken by Morgan Freeman, that made me think of how special Zach was: “Some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place that you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend…” Not that Zach was imprisioned as the quote referred, he was definitely a fellow whose “feathers were just too bright”. He was very special to John –and myself, as well — and he’s one of those children of God that will leave this earth “much more drab and empty” that he’s gone.

A Beautiful Soul Zachary my nephew had a heart full of love and a spirit that shined brightly. He lifted others with his kindness and made the world a better place just by being in it. Losing him is heartbreaking, but I find comfort in knowing his love will always remain with us. He will never be forgotten. We love you Zach! love, Aunt Donna and Uncle Larry

Zach Hatg was more than just a friend, you had a great soul. We made some amazing memories as kids growing up and meeting at Sanford, and into our young adult lives. I’ll always remember you had the black leather jacket, cold winters in mpls but you always had it on no worries in the world lol. 27th crew will always keep you in our memories. Sending condolences to your family, you’ll be deeply missed.

Zach was a great friend. Just a brilliant spark – he turned me on to so much great music, movies, literature. And you could have incredibly deep and insightful conversation with him about history, philosophy, and pop culture. He looked badass in a leather jacket. Sending love and condolences from all of the 27th Ave crew in Minneapolis.

It was always a pleasure learning more about music or cooking tips from Zach. Plus, he was a good sport and joined the elders (Marsha and Jane) at an occasional game of Yahtzee. Be at peace wherever your journey takes you now, dear heart.
