Mervel was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served on the Stephen Ministries team. He taught Sunday School and led Youth Groups at previous Lutheran churches. He was a Korean War Army veteran serving his time in Germany. Mervel was a retired turkey farmer, huge Husker fan and was dedicated to his Christian faith. Mervel treasured his children, grandchildren and his two great granddaughters as well as extended family. Family times were always filled with laughter and love. His faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus made his life a joyful one.
He is survived by his son Michael, Lincoln, daughter Bev (Tom) Wobig, Lincoln, daughter-in-law Connie Reed, Waverly; Grandsons Jason (Kara) and Todd (Julie), both of Lincoln; great granddaughters Hannah and Sarah; sisters Lucille Bevans and Evelyn Johnson; brother-in-law Art Althouse, sister-in-law Claryce Ketterer; numerous nieces and nephews and family friends. Preceded in death by his parents, wife Louise, sons Alan and Teddy, and brother Glen.
Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday January 14, 2026, at Faith Lutheran Church, 8701 Adams Street, Lincoln NE. Interment will be prior to the services, at 9:30 a.m., in the Rosehill Cemetery, Waverly, NE. The family will greet friends from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday January 13 at the Roper and Sons Funeral Home- Waverly Chapel 10851 N. 148th Street, Waverly, NE.
