Obituary

James “Jim” N. Hartung

June 7, 1960 - January 10, 2026

James “Jim” Nicholas Hartung, 65, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on January 10, 2026. He was born on June 7, 1960, in Omaha, Nebraska, to James Conrad and Karna Marie (Madsen) Hartung.

Jim was a devoted father and deeply loved his four children (Jimmy, Nick, Jake and Hannah), whom he considered to be his most important legacy. He also shared an important chapter of his life with Lisa Hartung, the mother of his children. Jim’s family was the center of his world and he found the greatest joys in his life offering guidance, encouragement and unconditional love to his children.

Jim also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and felt most at peace in nature.  Many of his favorite memories were formed while hunting, fishing, and camping with his friends and family. Jim’s Christian faith was also a very meaningful part of his life, especially in recent years. He grew to become a dedicated believer whose faith led him to treat others with humility, gratitude, and compassion.

While he never sought recognition, his accomplishments in gymnastics were extraordinary. A proud University of Nebraska gymnast from 1979 to 1982, he helped lead the team to four consecutive national championships. He was one of the most decorated athletes in collegiate history, earning 22 All-American honors, winning seven national championships, and receiving the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award. He was a two-time Olympian and a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal. His contributions to the sport were honored with induction into the inaugural class of the University of Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame and the inaugural class of the College Gymnastics Association Hall of Fame. Following his competitive career, Jim dedicated 19 years to coaching at the University of Nebraska, where he helped build a nationally respected program and mentored generations of athletes.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Hannah Hartung (Vinny Magnusson); sons Jimmy Hartung, Nick Hartung, and Jake Hartung (fiancé Maria Michalski); former wife, Lisa Hartung; sister Laura Davis (Mike Rodgers); brothers John Hartung and Jeff (Cathy) Hartung; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Lincoln Berean Church, 6400 S. 70th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. To the Hartung family. We go way back to the days of belonging to Sokol Omaha Gymnastics Club. All the trips we took competitively for our club. The fun we had and being one of Jim’s chaperones was one of the best of times. So proud of all you have accomplished. It’s not everyday that we had not just one Olympian but 3 from our club and from Nebraska then to have the US boycott their year short. Glad that Jim got another chance to make our state proud. I remember your wedding and being with your family. You will be missed but what a legacy you leave behind. The Charles Faulk Family. Carla (Seaman) Faulk.South High Class of 1973. RIP ❤️🙏

In 1972, I was a new 7th grade “Core” teacher (a blending of Reading and Social Studies) at George Norris Junior High in OPS/Omaha. I was only 12 years older than Jim. He would often show me his blisters, healing blisters, and callouses on his hands from working out. This from a 12-13 year old…He was that dedicated. I remember that just prior to an upcoming Christmas vacation, Jim was going to Arizona to compete. I said to Jim, “Bring me something back.” When we all returned from vacation, to my astonishment, I remember Jim hauling the remnants of a dried saguaro cactus into our classroom. It is approximately 5 feet tall which, at the time, made it taller than him! It illustrates how Jim was always thinking BIG and of someone else. Every time I look at it, I think of Jim as a wonderful student and all that he achieved through his dedication and hard work. A wise person once said something like: It is not how many years you live, but how you lived those years……. Peace be with you Jim and for all of those you loved and who love you.

Dear Hartung Family, Our hearts are with you all during this incredibly difficult time. We wanted to share how much Jim meant to us. He was a man who showed our daughter, Maria, such genuine kindness and warmth; she truly adored him and his sense of humor. We admire the bond Jim shared with his children—it was clear how much he loved you all and how much you adored him in return. We are especially holding Jake close in our hearts. We love him as if he were our own son, and we are grateful that Jim’s legacy lives on through him. Darwin has fond memories of Jim from years ago. He remembers the excitement of being a boy with a paper route, delivering the news to a local Olympian. To go from that childhood admiration to having Jim become part of our family story through Maria and Jake is something we treasure. Jim was a great man, both in the eyes of the world and in the quiet moments with those he loved. With all our love and deepest sympathy, Delia and Darwin His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord.—Matthew 25:23

For over 40 years I’ve had people ask me, “You were in the Olympics, weren’t you?” I had to let them know that just our names were similar. Jim always got a kick out of it. Proud to have him as a friend.
