Benjamin Avila

March 31, 1954 - May 8, 2025

Benjamin “Benji” Avila was born in Grand Island, NE

Benji graduated from UNL with a bachelor degree in Education.

He was a member of the UNL marching band while he was at UNL.

Benji went on to teach for Houston Independent School District for many years. While there, Benji developed an exchange program between UNK and Houston Independent School District so that students from UNK could complete student teaching hours in Texas. That student exchange program is still in existence today where UNK students and students from Texas can complete student teaching hours between states. Benji also spent time teaching English as a Second Language classes to people within community.

Benji moved back to Nebraska to take care of his aging parents. Benji worked for Grand Island School District in an administrative role and was involved in various non profits in Lincoln.

Benjamin is proceeded in death by his parents, Charles Avila (father), Delores Reynaga (mother), and brother, Steve.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Grand Island at a later date.

Benjamin is survived by aunts, uncles and many, many cousins.

Good man. I was part of the first Houston exchange program and got to visit with Ben a few years ago as he was doing some testing service within a Nebraska school. So sorry to his family upon hearing this news.
