Thomas O. Haley Sr., Captain, U.S. Navy Reserve retired, 77, of Lincoln, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012. He was born April 4, 1935 in Lincoln to John and Phyllis (Maycock) Haley. Graduated from Lincoln High School in 1952 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he graduated in 1956 with a BS degree in agriculture. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
After graduating from UNL, Tom attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy in 1957. He was an active member of the Naval Reserve for 27 years where he held numerous positions including Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Center in Lincoln. He was appointed by Senator J.J. Exon as Blue and Gold Officer to interview and recommend high school seniors for appointment to the US Naval Academy. Tom had a successful 45 year career as a stockbroker, beginning his career in 1960 with First Mid America and ending with A.G Edwards in 2005.
Family members include: wife, Phyllis of Lincoln; daughter and son-in-law, Ann McMickell (Rick) of Hastings; sons and daughters-in-law, John Haley (Kathie) of Wichita, Kan.; Jim Haley (Barb) of Highland, Ind.; Tom Haley (Lisa) of Omaha; Dan Haley (Liz) of Brick Township, N.J.; grandchildren, Matt Haley, Adam Haley; Beth Haley, Marge Haley; Rob McMickell, Allison McMickell; Jack Haley, Molly Haley and Will Haley; Josh Metta, Danielle Metta and Kim Metta. Also survived by Phyllis’ children: Teri Ernst (Doug); Phil Glynn (Kerry Eddy); grandchildren Carly, Hilary and Dylan Ernst.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday (9-4-12) at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 2325 S. 24th Street, with Rev. Craig Gavin officiating.
