Steve was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church where he also attended grade school. He then attended Lincoln Lutheran Junior High and graduated from Lincoln High School, class of 1968. Steve also graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1972 with a business degree.
Steve worked at the Surplus Center and Burden Sales Company for over 45 years, retiring in 2020. He developed many friendships there, especially in the shipping and receiving department.
Steve, his mother Dorothy, and nieces Niki and Liz enjoyed numerous summer trips to Colorado, New Mexico, and the Grand Canyon. Time spent in Estes Park was especially memorable and included frequent drives and hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park. In earlier years, Steve joined friends in hiking some of Colorado’s highest peaks, known as the “fourteeners”.
Steve was an enthusiastic Cornhusker fan, and especially enjoyed attending football, volleyball, and women’s basketball games. He also had fond memories of sitting in the “knot hole” section of Memorial Stadium as a boy.
His Christian faith and devotion to family were central to Steve’s life. He was a member of the church choir at Calvary and Faith Lutheran Churches for many years, regularly attended Bible study and volunteered his time with the Stephen Ministry program at Faith Lutheran Church. He especially valued the relationships he developed in service to others. Steve also helped care for his mother, especially when her health declined. He greatly enjoyed time spent playing with his nieces and attending their activities.
Steve is survived by his brother Dan (Sheryl) Oberheu; nieces Niki Oberheu (Asaad Almohammad) and Liz Oberheu (Sean Dwyer); great nephew Oliver Dwyer; aunt Marilyn Zimmermann; friend Susan Riepe; and nine cousins. Preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
