Sophia Kontras, 97, of Lincoln, passed peacefully January 16, 2015. Born December 25, 1917 in Mason City, IA the daughter of Greek immigrants Peter and Margaret Kosmos. Valuing her Greek heritage she was a member of Daughters of Penelope and was an AHEPA beauty queen.
A former board member of the Greek Orthodox Church, she had been the first woman president of the board. In 1941 she wed Gus Kontras and they enjoyed almost 73 years of marriage before Gus’s death April, 2014.
They worked side by side in their downtown hat and shoe business, then later owning and managing real estate. They loved to dance together and also had the good fortune to travel the world.
Nothing overshadowed her devotion to family: children James Kontras and Margaret Kontras Sutton; grandchildren Jim, Chrissy, Leigh, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Evan, Kosta; and great-grandchildren Liam, Maggie, Kaydence, and Tony.
