Obituary

Ronald Kent Owen

September 17, 1943 - December 11, 2025

Ronald Kent Owen, 82, of Lincoln passed away December 11, 2025. Born September 17, 1943, in Omaha, NE to Paul and Goldie (Harness) Owen.

Ron passed away peacefully at home this morning. He had been supported by Apace since the early 1990s following the passing of his parents. Ron continued living in his childhood home with Apace’s assistance (then Region V) until the age of 75.

Ron was a proud and hardworking man who valued his independence. He loved coming home and waving his paycheck as a sign of accomplishment. Ron spent many years doing contract work with Vital Services before joining day services at Apace in more recent years. Whatever the task, he gave his best and took pride in every job.

Ron’s pride extended to his self-care. His shirts were always neatly tucked, and if a cap or pair of glasses showed wear, he would discard them—his way of signaling it was time for something new. He liked to look presentable. One of his favorite routines was his daily bath, where he would sit and savor the warmth like a king. Ron also took pride in packing his lunch each day, confidently setting aside items he didn’t want and extending a (sometimes stern) hand for what he did. A firm shake of his head made it clear when the answer was no. Yet, Ron had a playful side—a favorite moment is when Ron broke the tension and monotony of a meeting by abruptly pushing away from the table and spinning dozens of circles in his chair with a mischievous smile, lightening the mood for everyone.

Ron was known for his structured routines, yet he embraced change with remarkable adaptability. When roommates joined his home, he welcomed them warmly and proudly assumed the role of tour guide for every visitor. Though blind and nonverbal, Ron personally led guests by the hand through a detailed tour of each room. He radiated pride as he showcased his home, his parents’ cherished piano, and even the smallest details—his treasured collection of keepsakes and trinkets.

In 2019, Ron moved into a new home designed by Apace with accessibility in mind—no stairs and features that would allow residents to age in place. Even though the change was necessary, many worried, as Ron’s childhood home was all he had ever known. Yet, Ron adapted quickly. He learned his way around, adjusted his routines, and continued his role as tour guide for visitors to the best of his abilities. On the night of the big move, while others hurried to unload boxes late into the evening, Ron paused to listen to his favorite music—a perfect reflection of his character: patient and kind, yet steadfast in who he was. He was able to pass peacefully at his new home at the age of 82.

As Ron’s support staff, we offered new activities and trips, but those who knew him understood he valued familiarity most. He taught us that joy isn’t about seeing the whole world—it’s about savoring what you love, however simple: a favorite chocolate, a crisp soda, or dancing to a great album in the comfort of home. We were honored to know him and proud to be able to dance with him.

Family members include his brother Richard (Cindy) Owen, Elkhorn; nieces and nephews Tara (Levin) Ruppert, Omaha, Dawnell (Doug) Glunz, Grand Island, Todd (Sarah) Owen, Omaha, and Dvid (Lorrie) Owen, Aurora; many great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Maryth Owen.

Funeral service: 1:00 pm Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Metcalf Funeral Chapel, 245 North 27th Street. Burial in Wyuka Cemetery.
