Obituary

Roger Allen Vicroy

January 4, 1935 - October 23, 2024

Roger Allen Vicroy, age 89, died peacefully after complications from a fall in Lincoln, Nebraska on October 23, 2024. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 67 years, Nancy Lue Vicroy (nee Lodge.) He is survived by his four children, Scott Vicroy, Dan (Donna Breen) Vicroy, Amy Vicroy Smith, and Kevin (Taa Dixon) Vicroy; his eight grandchildren, Alex (Ashley Prosper) Vicroy, Emma Smith, Abbey Vicroy, Parker Vicroy, Samuel Vicroy, Jackson (Nicole Chiabai) Smith, Evan Vicroy, and Clayton Smith; and his two great-grandchildren, Teagan Vicroy and Bennett Vicroy.

Roger was born in Germantown, Ohio and graduated from Germantown High School in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Lodge the following year. He graduated from Wilmington College with a degree in Industrial Arts in 1961 and began teaching and coaching at Brookhaven High School in Columbus, Ohio. He received his master’s degree in Industrial Arts Education from Wayne State University in 1968 and began teaching at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in Glassboro, New Jersey. In 1970 he moved his family to Terre Haute, Indiana, where he was a professor in the School of Technology at Indiana State University for 30 years. He and Nancy moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 2001.

Roger enjoyed coaching and watching sports and was a loyal season ticket holder at whichever school he was currently employed, and later, a happily retired Husker fan. He traveled the country watching the performances of his children and grandchildren, both athletic and artistic. He was the consummate handy man and stayed busy with home improvement projects well into his 70’s. He and Nancy were foster parents for several years and hosted three international exchange students in their home. He volunteered at CASA, Lincoln Literacy Council, and Teammates Mentoring.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Roper and Sons Midtown Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ Street.

1963, Brookhaven High School Metal Shop class, that is when my friendship started with Mr. Vicroy. There were about 15 guys in a special program for Industrial Arts where half of our day was Vocational Ed. When we graduated in 1965 some went to Wilmington where Roger attended and a couple went on the become Industrial Arts teachers, some in Law Enforcement, and others, like me, went into machine shops and apprenticeships. So many years have passed, children raised, many moves, and friends made by us all, however, none more special to me. We wanted so much to be in attendance for is celebration of life, however health and distance was not our friend. I was able to see Roger soon after Nancy passed and he shared his grief and feelings of loss. We had a dinner with his son, breakfast in the early sun, listening to so many stories about his family that he is so proud of in so many ways. He was struggling with health issues and it was hard to see him struggle so. I pray now that he is with his beloved Nancy in no more pain for eternity.

I met Roger and Nancy shortly after he became the Industrial Arts Teacher at Brookhaven in 1961. I was in his class of 1965, the first class to attend from their beginning year. Roger was instrumental in my development as machinist, family man, engineer, and eventually Small Business owner/president. We became lifelong friends visiting them in Indiana and Nebraska and they came to Ohio for a number of family milestones. We were invited to join in their 50th Wedding celebration in Colorado, and we were happy to receive their congratulations on our 50th in 2018. I share the importance of Roger in my life often, how he gave me confidence in myself as a graduating Senior and trusting me to speak to his classes at Indiana State as my career advanced due to his 3 years of teaching me Industrial Arts and about life. There are not enough words, or pages, to share the respect and gratefulness I have for Roger and his family. A man that will be missed by many, and now rejoined with the love of his life, Nancy

Thinking of you today especially since now both mom and dad are gone. Roger was quite a man and always so supportive of everything that you, the kids, or anyone else did I especially appreciated when he visited me in the nursing home so just a thought, but heaven is going to get quite a man much love.

Hello, my name is Bryan Seck. I serve as the Executive Director of Lincoln Literacy. Nancy and Roger served as one-to-one match volunteer tutors for almost eight years with Vietnamese students between 2005-2012. We appreciate their work and please know that their contributions ripple to the current as we have family members of Roger and Nancy’s students that have just arrived to Lincoln. On behalf of our 2,000 adult students, 200 volunteer tutors, and 50+ staff members, please accept our thanks for their service and condolences during this difficult time. Bryan Seck, Lincoln Literacy.
