Richard Edwin Bradley, D.D.S., 86, Lincoln, died Sunday (3-11-12). Born (3-9-26) in Omaha, Nebraska to Louis and Bess (Winterton) Bradley.
Grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School in 1944, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy May 31, 1944 and was honorably discharged July 11, 1946. Married Doris Irma McGowan June 8, 1946 in Watsonville, CA. Attended Creighton University 1946-48, the University of Nebraska Dental College 1950-52.
Received his MS in periodontics in 1958 from the University of Iowa and was the first Nebraska dentist to complete this program. Served as an instructor at the University of Iowa 1957-58; assistant professor Creighton University 1958-59; assistant professor chairman dept. of periodontics University of Nebraska 1959-62; associate professor 1962-65; associate dean College of Dentistry 1967-68; Dean 1968-80; Dean Baylor College of Dentistry 1980-90; president, dean emeritus 1990; clinical professor UNMC College of Dentistry 1990 to present. Established Dr. Richard and Doris Bradley Dental Scholarship at the University of Nebraska Foundation 2006. Fellow AAAS, International College of Dentists, member ADA, American Academy Periodontology Foundation (board of directors, president 1994-96), American College of Dentists (regent 1992-96, vice-president 1997-98, president Foundation 2001-02), Sigma Xi, Omicron Kappa Upsilon. In 2007 he received two prestigious national awards in conjunction with the 148th annual American Dental Assocation meeting, including the William John Geis Award and the 71st Pierre Fauchard gold Medal from the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is believed to be the first dentist with Nebraska ties to receive the Fauchard award and the third dentist with Nebraska ties to receive the Geis Award. Hobbies included golf, attending Husker sporting events, spending time with his children, grandchildren and many friends and he was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Lincoln.
Family members include daughter, son-in-law: Diane and Mike Stewart, Phillips, NE and their children Melanie Stewart, Omaha, NE, Patrick and wife Allison Stewart, Minneapolis, MN; daughter: Karen Bradley, Lincoln and her children Kristin Wacker and boyfriend Cody Havard, Memphis, TN, Megan Wacker and boyfriend Cole Davison, Lincoln; son, daughter-in-law: David and Cindy Bradley, Aurora, NE and their children Aaron and wife Mikala Bradley, Lincoln, Jordan Bradley, Aurora, NE and fiance Brandon Timm, Neligh, NE; sister-in-law: Gay Nix, Capitola, CA. Preceded in death by parents, wife Doris, infant son Kent, sister Marian Bradley.
Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Thursday (3-15-12) Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1200 South 40th Street. Pastor Tobi White, officiating.
Memorials in lieu of flowers, may be given to the University of Nebraska Foundation for the Bradley Dental Scholarship Fund.
