Obituary

Richard Charles Nicoll

February 13, 1951 - February 1, 2022

Rich passed away peacefully in the early morning of February 1st at his home in Lincoln with his family at his side. Rich was born on February 13,1951 in Minneapolis MN but moved with his family at an early age to St. Paul, MN where he spent his childhood. He attended Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, MN where he was captain of the Crack Squad and played on the hockey and football teams. He graduated in the class of 1970. He then went on to St. Olaf College in Northfield,MN, and graduated with a degree in economics in 1974.

Rich began working at the Minneapolis / St.Paul Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. while still in school and continued there after graduating, working his way up through several positions.  In 1981 he took a job with parent company PepsiCo and became a District manager in Kansas City, MO. In 1984 Rich was hired by LinPepco Partnership which was formed to purchase the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Lincoln. There, he served as President and General Manager for 10 years.

In the fall of 2001 Rich and his partner, the late Peter Dyson of Chicago purchased the oldest continuously run business in NE, The Johnson Hardware Co. headquartered in Omaha. Rich enjoyed growing the commercial door and door hardware company for the next 20 years until his passing.

Rich loved the lakes and Northern woods of MN dearly and spending time with his family at the cabin was his favorite thing to do in the whole world. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, hockey, cars and auto racing of any kind.

When the Lincoln Icebox opened in the mid 90’s Rich volunteered to teach young children how to skate and he was soon sharing his passion for hockey with them. Rich went on to coach the Lincoln Junior Stars traveling Squirt and Peewee teams for several years.

Rich was also very passionate about his high school Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, MN where he served 9 years on their Board of Directors and was very active in alumni activities.

Rich leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Nancy, and his daughter Jessica and son Jack, both of Omaha; as well as his brother Robert (Beth) Nicoll of Bloomington, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents John (Jack) and Mary Helen Nicoll and his brother Bill.

June 3, 2022

Our very sincere condolences to Rich’s entire family. We just learned about this today through some mutual friends, so our apologies for being very late. Rich was a stand up guy, as was mentioned here, and he had a great heart and a warm smile for all. We will miss him greatly.

I hope you are resting well. Rich was our quarterback for three high school football championships. He was a born leader. I often think of him, when he would throw a pass to me I would hope I would catch it so not to disappoint him and the team.

Rich and I shared “newboy-dom” at Shattuck, as well as tryouts for the Crack Squad. That was a long, long time ago……and those two things will bond you forever…..I will always remember Rich’s hearty laugh and great humor and miss hearing them. Rest well, my friend. You will be greatly missed.

I knew Rich from Shattuck. I was there to work myself up from wasted years in public education. Rich was a quietly impressive young man that I came to know in classes and athletics. As the Crack Squad’s Captain, he asked me to turn-out for the team. It was an Honor, but I couldn’t yet picture myself as a member of that elite drill team. I regret today for not making the effort to attain the excellence it required. Thank You Rich for maybe seeing something in me that I was unable to see in myself!

Rich was a demanding client who became a good friend. More than that his commitment to our community was viral. He “encouraged” me into Junior Achievement and I am still involved 35 years later. And, I’m not the only one. Rich’s enthusiasm, energy and commitment ‘infected” all who realized what an amazing leader he was. I miss you man!!

A loyal friend, a loving dad and husband, a person with charisma and humor, for whom giving and caring for others was a core belief. Our worlds were each made better for having Rich in our midsts.
