He graduated high-school in Ottumwa and joined the United States Air Force in 1963, serving until his honorable discharge in 1967.
Norman spent many years working on fishing boats in Alaska on the Bearing Sea and discovered a love of the Alaskan lifestyle and wilderness which he spoke of often. He enjoyed travel and called many places across the United States home throughout his life. Going on trips was always an adventure when Norman was involved because he had a passion for seeing new places and preferred to let the road guide him instead of a map.
In the early 2000’s, he settled in Nebraska to be close to family and spent his time working in Maintenance. He was known for his love of John Wayne and collected rare and interesting memorabilia, acquiring an impressive collection over the years that he proudly displayed. Norman was also an avid Harley Davidson rider and a master leatherworker.
Neighbors and family could rely on him for help fixing things and he would always find a solution to any problem. Norman’s quick sarcasm and sense of humor drew people in and the mischief in his eyes was one of his most beloved features. Aside from friends and family, Norman also loved his various pets from horses to snakes, and especially his dogs. He cared greatly for nature and wildlife and passed that love down to his family.
Norman is preceded in death by his father Oliver, mother Vera, sister Rosemary and his great-granddaughter Jensyn. His free spirit and contagious laughter will live on in his surviving family that includes his son Max, daughters Brenda and Melissa, grandchildren MaKayla, Mitchell, Jada, Norman, and Alexandria, as well as his five great-grandchildren and very special family friend Junior Polfus.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date in honor of Norman’s vast and varied adventures during his time on Earth.
