My kids and I met smile thru a friend and he was such a kind soul. I am so sad to see this news. He had such a way of talking and listening that made a person feel so good about themselves. He was so welcoming and caring. This is very sad news. He touched so many people. I know know how much he cared about his kids. What a wonderful man. I am so saddened by this.

Knowing Mike for the short time I did, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. He made the shifts at Taco Bell go so fast, I remember nights at closing we would crack jokes and things with the customers. It always made me laugh how goofy he was, but he also was one of the most caring guys out there. He was there for me through a super rough patch, made sure I was safe and cared for. I will always be thankful for the friendship we had. I love ya Mike and it’s not goodbye, it’s only see you later.

Some people you meet in life are easily forgettable while others make everything more enjoyable with their contagious personality and presence. Mike was one of those people. We clicked right away when we met rooming up together for HS wrestling camp at UNL (his freshman, my sophomore year). We were similar in so many ways, setting up for a high school friendship that I consider to be one of my greatest. There are more stories than I am able to capture in a short message. Someday, perhaps I’ll write a book about those times, although, am reluctant to do so given the incriminating nature of most of the events, lol. (maybe just for myself). Mike was a part of me in so many ways. I thought about him often and would always hope he could emerge from the battle going on within him at times. He was not perfect, but who really is? He would always be there to hear whatever you had going on. Mike was very understanding. When things went south for me the summer before my senior year and I found myself walking towards Lincoln on O Street in the middle of the night, it led me right to Mike’s Place where he welcomed me in, no questions asked. What a tremendous several months living together that was! A year or so after HS, our paths led us in different directions, although, we would always find time to re-connect and reminisce. If there was one thing true about Mike, it would be his loyalty to his friends and those he cared deeply about. I sensed at times, he would distance himself intentionally, so as not to negatively effect what I may have had going on. My biggest regret is not doing more for my friend. Some things in life will be forgotten forever, yet Mike will never be. The memories he created with those close to him will always be there, reverberating in our minds with the sound of his charismatic voice… “yeah man.” Love you Mike and goodbye (for now).

I was so grateful to get to know Mikey, he was such a genuine and happy soul, and wanted nothing but the best for everyone he came into contact with. Although it was a short time, I am so glad that our paths crossed as they did. He made each and every day brighter with his big smiles and bigger hugs, always accompanied with him saying, “I love you brother.” I love you too Mikey, you will forever be missed.

I just met the man a few months ago. But in the time we shared, I got to know a genuine caring person. I love you brother.
