Mary Elizabeth Commers, 98, of Lincoln, passed away September 20, 2016. Born November 1, 1917 in Pomeroy, IA to Harold John and Lou (Moody) Colburn.
Mary was an English teacher for five years in Iowa, Signal Corps, U.S. Army, Washington D.C. civilian, secretary, Purdue University, Lafayette, IN, English teacher and department chairman, Lincoln Southeast High School for 20 years. Mary was a member of First-Plymouth Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, Wooden Spoon, local, state, national education associations, LEA, NSEA, NEA, local, state, national English councils (NCTE), 50 year member of Chapter DN, P.E.O., Nebraska Literary Heritage Board, AAUW, LARP and LARTA.
Family members include her son, Dr. James R. (Jeanette) Commers; granddaughters, Tessa Commers, Seattle, WA, Halley (Seth) Graber, all of Omaha; sister, Amy Ladd Hoffman, Salina, KS; niece and nephews; grand nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, 2 sisters, 3 brothers-in-law, one nephew.
Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday (9-28-16) First-Plymouth Church, 2000 D Street with Rev. Dr. Jim Keck officiating.
