Obituary

Maria Pulos

January 1, 1920 - September 11, 2013

Maria Pulos died in the early morning hours of September 11, 2013, at the age of 93. For the past few years she faced increasing debility with grace and good humor at the Tabitha Nursing Home. She lived in Lincoln since arriving from Greece in 1947 as a student at the University where she received her degree and met her beloved husband, Christos E. Pulos, later a professor at UNL.

She was born in a Greek village in what was then Asia Minor, fled political conflict between Greece and Turkey in the 1920’s and settled for a time in Plovdiv, Bulgaria with her family. She survived a massive earthquake there before her family was again displaced by history. Her family arrived in Athens in 1935 where she lived through the Nazi occupation and Greek civil war before coming to the United States.

In Lincoln, Maria was a loving and selfless wife, mother, neighbor, and friend. For many years she was one of the Greek ladies whose baklava helped build the current Church of the Annunciation.

She leaves three daughters and their husbands, (Elizabeth Pulos and Doug Ballor, Tacoma, WA; Vicky Pulos and Ralph Edwards, Swampscott, MA; Cathy and Tobi Beedle, of Lincoln), four grandchildren (Molly, Audrey, Erika Beedle, and Rachel Ballor)–she attended the wedding of her oldest grandchild just 3 months ago (Molly and Chip Nielsen)–a sister in Athens ( Erika Constantinidis), a nephew in Lincoln (Ernie Pulos), and a niece (Christine Phillips) and a grandniece and her husband (Connie and Kelly Adams) in Omaha. She will be missed.

Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 13, 2013, at the Greek Church of the Annunciation, 950 N. 63rd Street, with Fr. Mark Curtwright and Fr. Nicholas Klodnicki officiating.
