Lowell grew up on a dairy farm in Clay Center until the age of 14. He attended Clay Center HS where he developed a passion for sports. He was a football, basketball, baseball, and track athlete, with baseball and the pole vault being his favorite.
Lowell and Marabell (Scalf) were high school sweethearts. They were married on November 22, 1953. They enjoyed a loving marriage of 68 years and raised son Scott and daughter Karen.
Lowell was a U.S. Army Veteran stationed in London, England from 1954-1956. He received his degree in math and physics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Lowell retired from Ameritas Life Insurance where he worked in accounting. He enjoyed playing bridge with friends and dancing at the Legion Club with Marabell. He played softball until he was 60, and bowled and golfed into his late 80s. If Nebraska was playing sports, Lowell was either there, watching on tv, or listening on the radio. Lowell attended several hundred Nebraska Football, Basketball and Baseball games since moving to Lincoln in 1951.
Family members include his son Scott Hoyt; daughter Karen Soucie; grandchildren Tara (Ryan) Miller, Joslyn (Cody) Brinkman, and Patrick Soucie; great grandson, Wesley Miller; brother-in-law, Dale (Shirley) Holst, and sister-in-law, Marilyn; nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife Marabell and brothers William “Bill” and Donald “Rusty.”
Memorial service: 1:00 pm Saturday, March 16, 2024, Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive.
