July 8, 1938 - October 22, 2018

Louella

Luella “Joan” (Jarvis) Stivers, 80, passed away on October 22, 2018 in Lincoln, NE. Born July 8, 1938, to Fred and Elizabeth (Robinson) Jarvis in Schaller, IA. Luella “Joan” (Jarvis) Stivers, dearly beloved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother died unexpectedly while briefly hospitalized on the day she was to be discharged and return home.

Several of the most important things in Joan’s life were her Christian faith, her family, friends and being of service to people, organizations, and good causes. People often commented to family members about Joan and her joy, her positivity, and her gift of encouragement to one and all.

Joan was a graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, having subsequently taught both elementary and secondary students where there was mutual love and respect. She later received her Master’s degree in education with a guidance counseling emphasis from the University of Memphis (then Memphis State University). Joan had specific interests, a few of which included church attendance, P.E.O. membership and participation with Good News Club (Child Evangelism Fellowship) and Christian Women’s Club.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Dr. Edward Stivers; son, Nathan (Michelle) Stivers; grandchildren, Joshua, Caleb, Abigail, Anna, Elizabeth; daughter, Rachel Stivers-Stewart (widow); brother, Byford “Bud” (Rachel) Jarvis; many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and loved ones. Preceded in death by her parents Fred and Elizabeth (Robinson) Jarvis of Alta, Iowa.

As a dedicated person of strong joyous faith Joan exemplified the Old Testament Bible verse, Nehemiah 8:10: “…the joy of the Lord is my strength!” Joan also exemplified New Testament Scripture by serving people and living a daily life filled with God’s sacrificial love as demonstrated through Jesus. She will be greatly missed and her treasured qualities will be forever remembered and hopefully emulated.

This family inspired summary was compiled by Joan’s daughter Rachel with contributing input from Joan’s husband Ed aka Dad and her son Nathan.

Visitation with family greeting friends will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday at Roper & Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Dr., Lincoln, NE.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday (10-29-18) at New Covenant Community Church, 6000 South 84th, Lincoln, NE 68516.

Burial 1 p.m., Tuesday (10-30-18) at the Cook Center Cemetery in Schaller, IA.

Memorial contributions may be directed towards the family for Joan’s favorite Christian organizations.
